Hours Sought: 40 hours per week; periodic overtime due to weather or emergencies

JOB SUMMARY

An employee in this position is responsible for contributing to the completion of various tasks including facilities maintenance, park maintenance, and other related activities on a crew of workers engaged in a variety of trades-based skilled and unskilled labor. This work is performed under the supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor; this role does not oversee others.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Performs a variety of semiskilled tasks in maintaining and repairing streets, sidewalks, drainage, parks, and public facilities.

Operates truck, transports crew, materials, and equipment to job sites.

Engages in grounds maintenance work, mows grass, trims shrubbery, plants, mulches, and maintains trees, flowers, and plants.

Operates light to medium construction equipment during maintenance and repair tasks.

Collects leaves, trash, and recyclables.

Picks up tree limbs; erects and maintains street signs.

Assists with snow and ice control.

Performs related tasks as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

Required:

High school diploma or equivalent

1 year of relevant work experience;

Preferred:

Two (2) years of relevant work experience, preferably in a local government setting or

Equivalent combination of education, training, and related experience.

Licenses:

An appropriate driver’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

General knowledge of maintenance, repair, and manual tasks related to trees, plants, and flowers.

General knowledge of common hand and power tools.

General knowledge of the safe use and operation and preventive maintenance of mechanical equipment.

Ability to preform manual labor for extended periods, often in unfavorable weather conditions.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers.

Ability to establish and maintain professional and friendly relationships with the general public.

SCHEDULE OF HOURS

This position would generally have a schedule of Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Periodic weather events such as snowstorms may create the need for this position to work on evenings and weekends.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Heavy work requiring the lifting of up to 100 pounds periodically, up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 20 pounds constantly.

Work requires balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, fingering, grasping, pushing, pulling, reaching walking, and standing.

Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and for conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly, in person or by telephone.

Hearing is required with or without correction to perceive information at normal spoken word levels to receive detailed information through oral communications, and/or to make fine distinctions in sound, in person or by telephone.

Visual acuity is required with or without correction for close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, color perception, depth perception, ability to adjust focus, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection of documents and statistical data, operation of machines and/or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The employee works outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.

Noise level in the work area is typical of most office environments with telephones and copiers, personal interruptions, and background noises.

On occasion, the employee may travel to other locations to perform work.
