Position Overview:
We are seeking reliable and enthusiastic Temporary Café Assistants to join our School Café team. In this role, you will help prepare and serve quality meals to students while maintaining cleanliness, safety, and compliance with food service standards. This is a part-time, temporary position ideal for individuals who enjoy working in a fast-paced, collaborative environment and providing friendly service to students and staff.
Required Qualifications:
High School diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent preferred.
Ability to read and write at a functional level (Volusia County Schools Level 1 skills assessment required).
Completion of Foundations: An Introduction to Volusia School Way Café and ServSafe Essentials Certification within the first year of employment.
For Satellite Delivery Only: Possess a valid Florida or state-issued Driver’s License (or obtain a Florida Driver’s License within 30 days of employment unless accommodation is required).
Required Skills:
Ability to work harmoniously with students, staff, and other adults, providing friendly and courteous service.
Ability to work efficiently and effectively in a fast-paced environment.
Basic math skills for recipe preparation, inventory management, and reporting.
Ability to work in high heat/humidity environments, as well as cool/cold areas for short durations.
Effective communication skills and ability to follow instructions accurately in English.
Ability to operate food service equipment and use cleaning chemicals safely.
Ability to work in noisy environments and perform repetitive tasks.
Strong teamwork skills and ability to work without close supervision.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Food Preparation:
o Wash, peel, and prepare fruits, vegetables, and meats.
o Prepare beverages, salads, sandwiches, entrées, and side dishes while maintaining sanitation standards.
2. Serving:
o Set up trays, steam tables, and food carts.
o Serve food on the cafeteria line, including for special events.
3. Cleaning:
o Wash dishes, pots, pans, and utensils.
o Clean kitchen equipment, floors, tables, and other areas as assigned.
4. Equipment Operation:
o Safely operate kitchen equipment and follow safety standards.
5. Team Support:
o Work collaboratively with the team to ensure program goals are met.
o Maintain a positive and professional demeanor under pressure.
6. Cashiering:
o Operate a computerized cash register and complete related bookkeeping tasks – Training provided.
7. Other Duties:
o Wear the designated uniform and appropriate shoes.
o Perform additional tasks as assigned by the Manager or designee.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
Ability to climb stairs/ramps and work in varying temperature conditions.
Must be able to communicate in English for Safety purposes.
