The K-2 Literacy Coach is a year-round, certified, school-based position that is responsible for coaching their school’s K-2 teachers in literacy. They observe, give feedback, model lessons, and support their caseload of teachers. The projected caseload would be 12 teachers in K-2 who are self-contained teachers and collaborating with the Manager of the Baker Teaching Fellowship to support any fellows in K-2. This coach would also collaborate with school-based administrators who evaluate teachers, in addition to partnering with any other teachers who help support primary grades literacy, including learning specialists or interventionists. The K-2 Literacy Coach will also lead professional development for teachers and collaborate with peers and the academic team across the region. In the event a teacher is out, the coach may be asked to lead literacy instruction or model key lessons and must be certified to support students if needed. 

Success in this role is measured by positively impacting literacy data for their school and for teacher retention of the teachers they coach.

As a school-based leader, this position is year-round and performs duties as assigned by the school leader. Typical hours for school-based leaders are 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and there may be occasional meetings, special school events, or commitments that fall outside of these hours. Student hours are typically 8 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Every Wednesday is a student early release day (1:30 p.m.), which allows teachers to participate in weekly professional development.

SPECIFIC DUTIESCoach primary grades teachers by establishing weekly observations and debrief meetings that include looking at data, best practices, and feedback to impact student achievementOwn the primary literacy content teams in collaboration with the regional academic teamConduct walk-throughs specifically focused on urgent academic monitoring and respond to observation data in the moment through real-time coaching.Pull grade-level or school-level trends in data and adjust instruction and coaching accordinglyTrack all data, including data meetings, lesson planning feedback, and observation feedback in the regional performance platformIn the event a teacher needs additional support in classroom culture to better achieve literacy goals, the coach would collaborate with a school-based administrator on support for classroom management routines and procedures that support literacy instructionOwn their own professional development and growth by leveraging lifelines within the region and the broader KIPP network, asking for and implementing feedback weekly, and pursuing additional professional development and growth opportunities both within and outside the region.Establish and uphold school culture norms and hold teachers and scholars accountable to norms and expectations, both in classrooms and in shared spaces.Participate in all diversity, equity, and inclusion work at a school and regional level. In our first year of paying out millage stipends, non-certified New-to-KIPP staff received an additional $3,700. Certified New-to-KIPP instructional staff received an additional $7,000. Certified staff also received TSIA stipends this year. There are other opportunities to earn money at KIPP Jax in the form of additional stipends. offerings are subject to change year to year.
