Research Associate 1 - Coral R ecruit T echnician The Coral Reef Futures Lab is hiring a Research Assoicate 1 to serve as a coral technician at the U niversity of M iami ’s Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric , & Earth Science . Responsibilities for this full-time, paid position focus on assisting with the production, rearing, and outplanting of sexually-derived coral recruits , and the coordination of a team of student volunteers in the care for sexually derived coral . This i nclude s the creation and coordination of daily /w eekly aquarium husbandry lists, as well as the training and supervision of junior coral-aquarists to c arry out the upkeep of various aquarium systems . The position is based at UM ’s Rosenstiel School with extensive responsibilities at the adjacent UM Experimental Hatchery, a land-based coral nursery dedicated to the propagation and growth of Caribbean corals . This position includes work on indoor systems , laboratories, and spawning tanks, significant time will b e spent at the outdoor hatchery . South Florida weather can be both unpredictable and at times extreme , and s un-protective clothing and head coverage via sunhat or hooded shirt are required . A pplicants should b e prepared to work up to 4 -5 hours at a time outdoors and on occasion be prepared to work hours outside of the regular business work week, as they will be jointly accountable for the response to equipment alerts , as well as involvement in night - time spawning activities. Underwater fieldwork as part of a team is also highly desirable , and an AAUS Scientific Diving certification, and/or MOCC boating certification, are preferred. Favorable applicants have a background in coral restoration science, aquaculture , or related field, as well as knowledge of aquarium husbandry. This position reports to the Coral Facilities Manager and coordinates with graduate students and staff in the Coral Reef Futures Lab. W e are looking for candidates who are responsible, committed to the health of the corals under their care, with excellent communication skills and the ability to work well with others, paired with the capability to diagnose and delegate duties related to plumbing, electrical, or other operational obstacle s . A Bachelors degree in a relevant filed is required.
