Interpret and apply applicable laws, rules, and regulations necessary to administer the survivor benefit provisions for Florida Retirement System (FRS) benefits. Review and process retirement applications for survivors, beneficiary designation forms, and other documents for survivor benefit accounts.

Audit and reconcile retirement data to ensure data integrity and accurately calculate death benefits.

Quality Control:

Provide quality control review of survivor benefits based on analysis of plan membership, beneficiary designations, service credit, and option selection.

Provide quality control review of Florida Retirement System (FRS) death benefit calculations and retirement information updated in the division’s Integrated Retirement Information System (IRIS), including account overpayments, joint annuitant changes and nullifications, Option Two lump sum payouts, refunds, and Deferred Retirement Option Program (DROP) payouts for deceased accounts.

Research retirement topics to prepare complete, accurate and grammatically correct responses to customers’ inquiries by letter or email and assist the section administrator. Also provide quality control review of outgoing correspondence prepared by section staff.

Section Operations:

Assist the Benefits Administrator with establishing policies and procedures which control the operation of the section, identifying areas of potential improvement, evaluating the section, and making recommendations, assigning, and monitoring the work in the section.

Serve as a resource person for other staff and may participate in workshops, seminars, and training sessions for agencies

Participate in employee selection modules and make recommendations to supervisor about work deficiencies, problem areas, and corrective actions.

Customer Service:

Assist with the section’s phone duty and counseling as needed.

Provide customer service that requires expert knowledge of the Florida Retirement System (FRS) and all existing systems, the Florida Statutes, rules, division policies, and related beneficiary, probate, or estate laws.

Counsel customers of the FRS which may include beneficiaries, agencies, attorneys, etc. Compose complex correspondence, memoranda, etc. to families of deceased members.

Additional Duties:

Perform other duties as required.

Serve as liaison between the section and other areas at the division.

Minimum Qualifications:

Four years of professional experience in the area of insurance, retirement or social security, administration, call center, customer service, fiscal work, statistics, or personnel. A postsecondary degree may be used as an alternative for years of experience on a year-for-year basis.

The mission of the Division of Retirement (division) is to deliver a high quality, innovative, and cost-effective retirement system. The division currently has 225 full-time retirement staff and manages a FY 2024-25 operating budget of $48,864,720. The division administers the Florida Retirement System (FRS) Pension Plan, currently the fourth largest state retirement system in the US with more than 2.7 million active, retired, and terminated vested and non-vested members and $187.2 billion in assets. The division pays out $12.9 billion a year in retiree benefits and maintains the service history, vesting and membership status records, and collects nearly $5.5 billion annually in employer and employee contributions from more than 1,000 employers for all FRS members.
