POSITION OVERVIEW:
Journeyman - Typically 3 years and above documented field experience in chosen craft discipline with ability to read and interpret instructions and document, plan and perform work activities independently.
SUMMARY:
Lays out, aligns and welds fabricated, structural steel, handrail, misc. steel, buildings and pipe, according to blueprints and metallurgy.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:
May require a high school diploma or its equivalent with previous years of experience in the field or in a related area. Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Works under immediate supervision. Primary job functions do not typically require exercising independent judgment.

TECHNICAL DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Selects type and size of pipe or other related materials and equipment according to specifications.
2. Selects equipment and plans layouts, assembly, and welding, applying knowledge of geometry, physical properties of metal machining, weld shrinkage and welding techniques.
3. May be required to use Gas-Metal Arc, Flux-Cored Arc, Gas-Tungsten Arc, Submerged Arc, or Shielded Metal Arc welding processes.
4. Lays out, positions, aligns and fits components together in various body positions.
5. Bolts, clamps and welds together metal components of products such as piping systems, plate, pipe and tube or structural shapes, using arc and arc gas welding equipment. May weld in flat, horizontal, vertical, or overhead position. May tack weld assemblies together.
6. Connects cable from welding unit to obtain amperage, voltage, slope and pulse as specified by procedure or supervisor.
7. Obtains specified electrode and inserts electrode into portable holder or threads consumable electrode wire through portable welding gun.
8. Starts power supply to produce electric current.
9. Strikes arc which generates heat to melt and deposit metal from electrode to work piece and join edges of work piece.
10. Manually guides electrode or gun along weld-line, maintaining length of arc and speed and movement to form specified depth of fusion and bead, as judged from color of metal, sound of weld, and size of molten puddle.
11. May manually apply filler rod to supply weld metal. May clean or degrease weld joint or workplace, using wire brush, portable grinder, or chemical bath. May repair broken or cracked parts and fill holes. May remove excess weld, defective weld material, slag and spatter, using carbon arc gouge, hand scrapper, grinder or power chipper. May preheat work piece, using hand torch or heating furnace. May cut metal plates or structural shapes.
12. Examines weld for bead size and other specifications.
13. Capable of setting weld machine parameters and maintain weld machine in working condition.
14. Loads, transports and unloads material, tools, equipment and supplies.
15. May assist in lifting, positioning and securing of materials and work pieces during installation.
16. Performs minor maintenance or cleaning activities of tools and equipment.
17. Assists other mechanics as needed.
18. Respiratory protection is common and may be required.
19. Required to pass employer performance tests or standard tests to meet certification standards. Performs only procedures certified in.
20. Responsible for observing and complying with all safety and project rules. Performs other duties as required.
21. Use effective verbal and written communication skills.
22. Be capable of listening and communicating with other supervision and employees.
23. Be motivated and work safely and productively.
24. Understand and respond accordingly to all safety alerts, warnings, hazards, etc.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. May be required to lift and carry items weighing no more than 50 pounds.
2. Must possess enough strength and stamina to perform the technical duties and essential functions as identified above.
3. Must be able to move in and around confined and uneven areas.
4. Must have full range of motion consistent with age.
5. May be required consistently to work 12 hour shifts performing construction based labor in varying temperature extremes and conditions.
a. May be required, on occasion, to work up to 16 hours in a single shift.
6. Must be able to climb and maintain balance on stairs, ladders, scaffolds and steel framework.
7. Must be able to adequately hear and respond to voice commands and alerts from other employees, alarms, and other job related noises.
8. Visual acuity, depth perception and color discrimination consistent with that required to work at heights and on uneven surfaces.
