The System Protection & Control Technician (Relay Tech) must be able to work in various working environments from generation plants, transmission switch yards and control houses, and distribution substations. The Relay Tech must maintain a high level of awareness for hazard recognition and maintain safe work practices. Will be required to maintain, install, repair, and troubleshoot complex control systems, protective relay systems(microprocessor and electro-mechanical); substation and electric utility protection systems; station automation and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems.Relay Tech is responsible for correctly reading and properly interpreting substation drawings (e.g., single line drawings, AC and DC schematics, panel wiring diagrams, and panel layout drawings). Must be available for periodic call outs to respond to power system emergencies, and be available for afterhours system support-on-call. Relay Tech is responsible for writing procedures and/or test plans in support of maintenance and construction activities.Properly maintain tools ,test equipment, and vehicles.Perform switching and tagging to obtain proper clearance on equipment for repair, maintenance, or construction work per procedure.Performs all duties in a safe manner complying with all safety and operational procedures. May work in areas requiring caution and use of safety devices.Required Qualifications:

High School degree or GED.

Greater than 3.5 years related experience in relay work or equivalent job-related and educational experience.

Tech aptitude testing is required for this position.

Ability to carry 75lbs for 100ft.

Ability to work near energized electrical equipment which may also involve extremely tall structures.

Ability to perform maintenance in confined spaces.

Ability to work in inclement and extreme weather conditions.

Must be able to obtain and maintain unescorted access to Duke Energy generation facilities and NERC CIP locations.

Ability to obtain a valid driver’s license.

Desired Qualifications:

Associates Degree, Trade, or Technical School in electrical theory

Bachelor’s Degree in related field

5+ years’ experience in Relay work or related field.

Ability to interpret electrical wiring diagrams and drawings.

Ability to troubleshoot, make recommendations, and prioritize system improvements.

Extensive knowledge of test equipment, electromechanical and microprocessor relays, meters, computers, communications equipment, and proper wiring methods and practices

Comprehensive knowledge of mathematical computation procedures including, basic math, and square roots.

Demonstrated proper knowledge of safe testing, maintenance, and repair techniques.

Considerable knowledge of the proper and safe use and application of tools, equipment, and hardware.
