Job Description: Head of the English Department and English Teacher (Part-Time) Position : Head of the English Department (Remote) Reports to : Director of Curriculum and Instruction At Dwight Global, the Head of the English Department holds responsibility for ensuring that the faculty members strive to fulfill Dwight Global’s mission of igniting the spark of genius in every child as well as embody Dwight Global’s three pillars. Departmental Leadership
The HOD meets with the DCI at the beginning of the school year to set departmental goals in line with the school’s mission, and works to accomplish them over the course of the year.
Works to build a spirit of teamwork and collaboration within their department members
Holds Departmental meetings at least once a trimester, or more often as needed
Through their own planning and preparation, demonstrate extensive knowledge of content and pedagogy, students and faculty, high-level instructional outcomes, and assessments
Clearly communicates with faculty members and other members of the Dwight community
Models Dwight community citizenship through their participation in residential experiences and other online experiences
Mentors new and returning faculty on all aspects of their roles
Teaching roles
Teach English classes ranging from grades 6-12
Hold twice weekly lessons, 45 minutes in duration per class

Instructional Oversight and Guidance
Oversees and guides teachers within their department in instruction and curricular planning, ensuring that school policies, standards, and procedures are met and followed.
Reviews and guides teachers on progress reports and grading.
Reviews course grading and assessment data to ensure students are making progress against key standards.
Curricular Planning
Works with the Director of Curriculum and Instruction to ensure vertical alignment within their department, as well as alignment with external standards.
Faculty Evaluations
Completes the faculty observation process for all members of department.
Summer Duties
Identify strengths and areas of opportunity for the Department on the whole and set goals.
Consider school calendar and adding activities that allow students to showcase their unique abilities in this area.
Review courses and complete the HOD checklist.
Work with any new faculty members to assist them with Canvas and Dwight Global.
Answer faculty questions.
Assess applications as needed (most important for Language, Math, and English) and answer occasional curriculum questions from prospective students
Handle any summer hires (review resumes, schedule interviews, select candidates; this likely won’t be needed, but if it is, HOD is expected to lead the process)
Handle last minute course needs (e.g., a student who needs a particular college level English course, a student who needs a remedial math course)
Partake in Dwight Global Fall Orientation
Work with Department to prepare orientation presentation to students
Host departmental meeting at orientation and over summer as needed
Participate in a faculty working group (these are asynchronous forums where teachers think about the future of Dwight Global and contribute to discussion groups)
Time Commitment
The time commitment may vary from week to week, with some weeks involving significant time, and other weeks with less.
The HOD is expected to work over the summer on course reviews, faculty working groups, and training and mentoring new faculty in preparation for the year (specific duties listed above).
Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent) in English, Educationor related field; Master’s Degree preferred
Demonstrated ability to work online
Commitment to Dwight Global's mission, vision, values, and strategic goals
Demonstrated leadership and management skills
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to build relationships with students and families, and collaborate across departments
Excellent planning skills coupled with the ability to pivot quickly and act urgently to address problems that arise
Ability to bring flexibility and optimism to work
