Career Opportunity:The Sr Design Engineer, in alignment with the business strategy, is responsible for the evolution of the base design of the assigned machine platform(s) according to market needs resulting in a quantifiable competitive advantage. The core functions of the role are to drive the vision for the platform, analyze customer needs, market trends, and understand competitive offerings. The Sr Design Engineer will define and execute against the platform strategy and product requirements through Packaging Systems teamwork.How You Will Impact WestRock:Ensure that quality improvements meet the needs and expectations of a diverse customer base
Plan, design, and manage processes while focusing on refining and improving to increase efficiency and effectiveness
Base Platform ManagementUnderstand market segment and market requirements
Be aware of competitor’s products & benchmark competitive products
Develop new products or enhancements related to assigned platform(s) Meeting the needs of the market and end use customer
Own the capabilities and the product life cycle of the platform
Be aware of market costing/pricing for the platform.
Ensure a cost-effective design and integrate Design Anywhere, Produce Anywhere, Service Anywhere (DAPASA) needs.
Collaborate with technical sales and field service organizations to facilitate continuous improvement, design changes & upgrades
Understand the platform coordination from mechanical, electrical and automation perspectives
Maintain the initial integrity of the platform by controlling the design
Coordinate with R&D on improvements to the design
Drive development projects by directing and influencing cross functional teams
Manage subcontractors and their work to meet design requirements within project timelines
Machine Production and Installation SupportSupport the Technical Sales managers on platform production projects
Respond to questions, troubleshoot, provide studies and estimates
Provide cost effective solutions to problems effecting the customer product while maintaining the integrity of the design
What You Need to Succeed:Required: 5 to 7 years of technical packaging industry experience
Machinery platform specific training, preferred
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering is required; MBA is an advantage
Preferred: Six Sigma certification, continuous improvement background
CAD skills; Preferred, PTC Pro E / Creo / Windchill, AutoCADPC skills; Preferred i.e., MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint
Excellent communication skills both writing and spoken.
Understanding of cost drivers of manufacturing
Leadership skills to ensure the proper mobilization of application engineering and subcontractors to execute against the platform design requirements
Technical Coach / Mentor to broaden engineering team skills
Ability to travel up to 20%
