This position will initiate the design, development, execution, and implementation of operations technology research projects. This position will be responsible for applying diagnostic techniques to identify problems, investigate causes, contact vendors, apply appropriate solutions, and fully own projects to completion. This position will be responsible for technical problem solving with internal teams, business, and vendor partners. This position will identify new research trends, data, and repeatable operations solutions. This position will work with key stakeholders to generate hypotheses and create models that answer business and operational questions. This individual will be required to telecommute to the office in alignment with Norfolk Southern’s office/remote - hybrid work policy.Job Duties: Provide production support and enhancements for existing operations research applications. Design new mathematical or machine learning models and implement them in programming language such as C/C, Java or Python. Evaluate the accuracy and quality of data sources, and develop appropriate remedies for data gaps. Investigates the feasibility of applying scientific principles and concepts to operations. Understands railroad operations in order to apply and design the right models. Plans and executes applied research. Maintains substantial knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories and may contribute to research literature and conferences. Participates in project planning and coordination for their business group. Monitors and communicates impacts and trends related to assigned business groups. Maintains current knowledge of relevant technologies by participating in all stages of the lifecycle. Participates in testing new technologies for impact analysis and transition to support operations. Collaborate with business partners in various departments to identify opportunities for process improvement. Work with application development teams to integrate developed models into a production environment. Manages individual capacity and balancing time between operations and initiatives, meeting expectations for ongoing resourcing processes. Goes through the development cycle and actively work with business partners to apply the models to provide value. Leads the junior scientists and has extensive railroad experiences.Job Requirements: Master’s degree in an engineering field, operations research, IS/IT, or any related, relevant field. Minimum of two (2) years of experience with operations research modeling, simulation, and advanced analytics in the transportation or railroad industry. This experience must include at least two (2) years of experience:o Developing decision support systems using operations research models;o Providing hands-on expertise in the design and development of operations research models and decision support systems;o Utilizing operations research techniques and engineering skills in delivering decision support systems;o Analyzing existing operations research applications and providing production support and enhancements;o Designing new mathematical and machine learning models and implementing them in programming languages such as C/C, Java, and/or Python;o Evaluating the accuracy and quality of data sources and developing appropriate remedies for data gaps;o Collaborating with business partners in various departments to identify opportunities for process improvements utilizing decision tools to develop project proposals and manage projects;o Working with application development teams to integrate developed models into a production environment; ando Collaborating with various departments to identify opportunities for process improvement by using decision tools to develop project proposals and manage projects to their completion.
