Job Description: Overnight Live-out Assistant / Direct Support Professional

The House Assistant shares life in the community and provides direct care support to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Quantity of work: This is a full-time, hourly position - specifically for overnight coverage four days a week (9pm to 7am). The expectation is that the employee’s standard work week will be a 40-hour work week.

Compensation and Benefits: The base compensation rate is $10 per hour at rest and a compensation rate of $17 per hour for any training hours or any time that the DSP is hired to perform a task such as assisting a resident with using the restroom. Benefits include 20 days of Paid Time Off per year (renewed on the anniversary of your hire date) and nearly full coverage (93%) for health, (100%) vision, and (100%) dental insurance, (100%) Life insurance of $15,000. The organization contributes a 3% match to each staff member’s 401k retirement account through ADP.

Quality of work: Upon hire, each employee will review and sign the job description for their position. The duties and core competencies outlined in that job description will become the standard against which the performance will be measured upon their 90-day review and upon each annual evaluation thereafter. A signed copy of each individual’s job description shall be kept in their personnel file.

Setting of work and expectations for the role: Setting of work and expectations for the role: You will work in a residential home where four adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities live along with some live-in staff members. When there is not an active task to perform (such as assisting someone in the restroom or administering a PRN medication), this position is not required to be awake; however, they must be punctual in arriving at the house (by 9pm) and available to wake up and respond at any time during the evening should their support be needed. The overnight shift terminates at 7am the next morning and documentation is required at the end of each shift. A private room with fresh bedding is available for sleeping. If an emergency such as a fire or a medical distress should occur, the position is to call 911 immediately, and notify the Home Life Leader and/or Director of Residential services as soon as the emergency is addressed. If an emergency should occur overnight, the position would be responsible for managing the emergency.

Typical responsibilities of the overnight version of this position:

Assist individuals with using the restroom

Administer PRN medications as needed

Complete documentation at the end of each routine

Complete required training

Typical responsibilities of the non-overnight version of this position:

Responsibilities for Shared Community Life

Organize the home around supporting the daily lives of the residents

Support the physical, relational, and spiritual wellness of the residents

Participate in community celebrations, outings, and retreats

Engage in the community’s model of shared leadership

Responsibilities to the residents

Respect and commit to understand the history of the residents

Know and follow the residents individualized support plans

Assist with personal, health, social, and practical needs (ADLs, meals, etc.) of each Core Member

Accompany the residents on social engagements, healthcare provider appointments, etc.

Complete documentation related to medication administration, routine notes, financial logs, etc.

Satisfy required trainings (for example: first aid, crisis de-escalation, and various state trainings)

Responsibilities to the Larger Organization

Maintain a clean, safe, and organized home

Communicate, clearly, competently, and respectfully, with organizational stakeholders

Support the work of other departments (for example, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion [DEI] or Communications & Development)

Support other expressions of the organization’s mission – advocacy, community integration, etc.

Miscellaneous / Occasional Responsibilities

Host guests who wish to learn more about the mission and lived experience of the organization.

Required qualifications:

Full COVID-19 vaccination with booster vaccines if eligible

18 years of age or older

Eligible to work in the United States

High School Education or GED equivalent

Fluent enough in English to read, understand, and implement health care plans and respond appropriately in emergency situations

Able to pass a background check (no prior history of crimes against other people, financial exploitations, or crimes related to the manufacture, delivery, or possession with intent to manufacture or deliver a controlled substance)

A current/valid driver’s license

Have a clean motor vehicle report (no DUIs, hit-and-runs, or super-speeder tickets)

Able to pass a pre-employment drug screening

Willing to become certified in First-Aid/CPR and in crisis de-escalation technique

Preferred qualifications:

At least one year of experience in working with individuals with developmental disabilities

Elementary proficiency, or greater, in American Sign Language

Core Competencies:

Be able to model appropriateness in behavior, language, conversation, humor, punctuality, and dress

Express interpersonal effectiveness in building relationships with persons with disabilities through respectful communication and appropriate/professional boundaries

Demonstrate a sensitivity to the power dynamic that comes with working in a vulnerable population
