Research and Instruction Librarian Posting Number S01259JP Department Library Job Summary The Bowdoin College Library seeks a creative and collaborative Research and Instruction Librarian to join us as a liaison to academic departments, with emphasis on government and legal studies, history, and economics. Reporting to the Associate Librarian for Research, Instruction, and Outreach, the successful candidate will support the research and scholarship of students and faculty, collaborate with faculty on designing inclusive learning experiences and assignments, and engage students in a variety of ways in their learning about information and research. The Research and Instruction Librarian will help to build collections that support the Bowdoin College community and the efforts of the CBB Consortium (libraries at Colby, Bates, and Bowdoin Colleges).As a valued member of a dedicated, thoughtful, and enthusiastic Research and Instruction Team, the successful candidate will join our commitment to embody the principles of inclusive excellence that are core to Bowdoin’s purpose. Teach creative and innovative library instruction sessions that support diverse learners

Collaborate with faculty on creating inclusive learning experiences

Guide students and faculty in their research and connect them with relevant resources

Build relationships with assigned departments to ensure that library services and collections align with their teaching and research interests and to communicate on general library questions or concerns

Develop collections for assigned departments and participate in collections management activities and decisions. Collaborate with the Associate Librarian for Collections and other staff on stewardship of collections for assigned departments.

Learn, grow, and develop through professional development that connects to assigned academic departments, new areas of the curriculum, your own pedagogical interests, or emerging technologies and research methodologies

As a member of the Research and Instruction Services team:

Engage in all general research services and instruction activities, including shared Research Lab staffing

Participate in planning and development of instructional programs and in setting priorities for Research and Instruction Services

Participate in the development of programming that engages students, cultivates a deeper connection with the library and its resources, and contributes to an environment of inclusion and belonging

Demonstrate a commitment to valuing diversity and contribute to providing an inclusive working environment

The salary Range for this position is expected to be: Minimum $71,500 – Maximum $78,000.

A master’s degree from an ALA -accredited library program or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Demonstrated experience providing individual consultations and group instruction and excellent presentation skills.

Demonstrated ability to use of a broad range of research tools and information resources.

Knowledge of current national trends in research services, government-information resources and services, library instruction, and electronic resources.

Demonstrated effectiveness in advancing equity and inclusion.

Preferred:

Demonstrated success in developing programs targeted at undergraduate students.

Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents

Required:

Successful research services and individual and group instruction experience, with emphasis in the areas of government and legal studies, history, and economics.

Proven expertise in the use of legal resources and government documents.

Evidence of use of creative and innovative approaches to teaching.

Preferred:

Successful research services and individual and group instruction experience in Africana studies.

Experience teaching and/or collaborating with faculty members in use of digital humanities methodologies.

Practical experience with federal, open, and proprietary data resources.

Standard Work Days and Hours

Generally between 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Mon-Fri, with occasional evening and weekend hours as needed. This is an exempt position requiring time commitment necessary to satisfactorily complete job requirements.
