Tax Accountant Job Description

Khalsa CPA Services, a growing tax and accounting firm in Kahului, Maui, is looking for a skilled and organized tax accountant to join our team in delivering high-quality client tax and accounting work. Our firm focuses on managing growth through a structured, supportive environment where teamwork, accountability, and professional development are valued.

The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, reliable, and skilled at managing multiple client files efficiently. This role involves preparing individual tax returns, assisting with bookkeeping and reconciliations, and maintaining clear, professional communication with clients while ensuring accurate documentation within the firm’s workflow systems.

Role and Responsibilities

Coordinate and process incoming client tax and accounting work

Prep initial steps of client tax returns, gathering supporting documents for accurate entry and review

Communicate with clients to clarify missing items or resolve issues

Prepare accounting entries and reconciliations in QuickBooks, ensuring client records are accurate and up to date

Maintain organized worksheets and task tracking for each client

Be attentive and responsive to client needs throughout the year

Support accountants with project tracking and client follow-up

Identify opportunities to improve systems and documentation flow

Qualities Needed

Strong attention to detail and follow-through

Experience with Lacerte, QuickBooks, Karbon, or similar software (bonus)

Clear written and verbal communication skills

Excellent organizational and recordkeeping skills

Ability to track multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously

Comfort learning and adapting to new tools and procedures

Caring, professional manner in all client communications

Strict adherence to confidentiality and accuracy standards

Day-to-Day Duties for Assigned Clients

Primary contact for assigned clients

Coordinate intake, tracking, and delivery of client work

Provide support in dealing with tax notices or agency inquiries

Maintain up-to-date client status and notes in workflow software

Ensure all deadlines are met and follow-ups documented

Participate in system updates or workflow improvements

Qualifications and Education Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field (or equivalent experience)

2–5 years of experience in tax or accounting office work

Experience with client coordination or project management in a tax or accounting office

PTIN, EA, or CPA certification a plus — eligible for additional compensation and higher-level assignments

Preferred Experience and Skills

Experience with tax return processing, assembly, and delivery

Familiarity with accounting/tax workflows

Comfort with digital systems and secure file handling

Strong sense of ownership and accountability

Schedule: Full-time during tax season (January–April, August–October), with the option of flexible or reduced hours outside peak periods.

Compensation: $25–35/hr DOE
