Ho`ōla Lāhui Hawai`i is a FQHC, non-profit community health organization serving families throughout the county of Kaua'i. We are seeking a full-time Clinical Specialist for our medical clinic.

The Clinical Specialist Unit Clerk is under the direct supervision of the Clinical Specialist III/Director of Nursing. A team player and able to work with patients, patients’ families, staff members and health care providers. Able to demonstrate clinical competence, professionalism and maintain confidentiality regarding patient care.

Position requirements/description

Duties include:

Greets all patients and visitors in a prompt, courteous and helpful manner using effective interpersonal and communication skills.

Always maintain patient confidentiality and privacy. Promotes patients’ rights and is knowledgeable of the patient complaint process.

Answers phone calls with appropriate salutation & identification of person answering phone – friendly, courteous, cordial. Take incoming messages and distribute appropriately.

Ensure patient registration form is complete and updated in ECW, with copies of insurance cards and ID scanned into ECW at every visit. Verifies patient information and insurance coverage at every office visit.

Knowledge of provider scheduling protocols. Schedules appointments with all pertinent information required according to type of appointment. Request medical records from previous providers if needed.

Completes reminder calls to all patients with appointments the day before the appointment. Verify all info. (Address, Phone Number, Ins, etc.) with reminder of collection of payment if any.

Takes patient chief complaints, vital signs and prepares patient for examination.

Notifies Clinical Specialist II, III, or health care providers immediately, based on patients’ complaints or vital signs as identified by Triage Policies/Procedures.

Maintains, verifies, and has patient sign for patient medication for pick up.

Advises patient of posts visit information completed by health care provider, reviews and discusses the health care providers’ plans and tests to ensure that patient understand the health care provider’s orders.

Schedules tests, appointments and/or procedures for patients as ordered by healthcare providers. Instructs patients regarding preparation for appointments/tests.

Initiates/Completes referrals and documents for specialty appointments. Complete authorization, travel, etc forms if needed. Schedule specialty appointments and advise patient of all information.

Initiates/Completes needed documents for Imaging/Lab orders such as paper orders, authorizations, travel, etc. forms as needed. Schedule Imaging/Lab appointments and advise patient of all information.

Initiates/completes forms/electronic information needed for authorization from medical insurers as required for imaging, procedure and/or medications.

Follow up on all referrals and imaging orders to make sure completed. Get all records from referral physicians, imaging, labs etc. and send to providers.

Keeps patients and patients’ family members informed, returns calls in a timely manner, and properly document action(s) taken during conversation.

Required:

Medical Terminology and basic clinical skills.

Clinical competence as demonstrated by work experience, references, or certified programs such as which includes but not limited to: Nurses Aide, Medical Assistant, Licensed Practical Nurse or Registered Nurse.

Basic Life Support certified.

Tuberculosis clearance.

Good understanding of medical terminology and experience in the healthcare field.

Flexible, organized, mature, impartial, and ethical.

Able to communicate clearly and tactfully with others.

Ability to problem-solve, set priorities, and work with multiple distractions and interruptions.

Self-motivated, honest, energetic, and committed.

Possesses tact and interpersonal skills necessary to deal with patients, physicians, providers, employees and others.

Familiarity with our various Hawai'i cultures and languages.

Culturally sensitive to the needs of the people of the community.

Preferred:

Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)

Certified Medical Assistant
