The National Tropical Botanical Garden has an immediate opening for a full time Preserve Technician at our Kahanu Garden in Hana, Maui. This position is a temporary position through 2026. This position will serve as the point person for the treatment of invasive species, trail development, and outplanting of native plants in approximately 62 acres of coastal forest. This position works regularly with the Kahanu Garden mālama ‘āina team, NTBG science and conservation department, and NTBG Limahuli Preserve staff to assure field work is completed according to institutional standards, and is congruous with overarching strategic goals for the institution.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
● Implement core invasive species control of invasive plant species in the Kahanu Preserve, focusing largely on African Tulip Tree, and Inkberry.
● Support operations relating to staff, interns, volunteers, and researchers in Kahanu Preserve.
● Independently work in the Preserve to conduct herbaceous weed control, trail development, and outplanting of native species using both natural and chemical means.
● Compile monthly reports quantifying areas where target invasive species are treated, and where various native species are established.
● Ensure standard operating procedures are in place and implemented.
● Participate in collaborative research projects designed by NTBG Science and Conservation staff and the Director of Kahanu Garden and Preserve
● Assist in special projects upon request by the Kahanu Garden Director and the Assistant Director for Grounds and Projects.

Education and/or Experience:
● One year of experience in manual, hands-on horticultural and conservation activities
● Proven ability to work productively with limited oversight.
● Experience with invasive species control, pesticide application, and Integrated Pest Management (IPM).
● Strong worth ethic, ability to be self driven and reach high levels of project results.
