A/V Digital Storytelling Team Leader - Alakaʻi Hui Moʻokaʻao

Mana Maoli is seeking 1 or more passionate, organized, detail-oriented leaders with experience in managing projects, staff/contracted personnel, and interns to serve as the administrative backbone of our Audio/Visual (A/V) Digital Storytelling Team. This is a critical role responsible for leading and managing all things A/V, including oversight of independent contractors and interns engaged on a per-project or per-event basis, program-related A/V documentation, and working with our host schools as well as other teams within our nonprofit (i.e. program, social media and admin teams), and more as we grow with the times.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is a behind-the-scenes wizard—someone who thrives on coordination, communication, leadership, and implementing effective systems for project management. The ideal candidate possesses strong leadership and administrative skills, enjoys project and people management, and feels confident in juggling multiple tasks. While it is not a required minimum qualification, the ideal candidate also has familiarity with audio and video production systems and workflows, enabling them to oversee independent contractors in the A/V fields with clarity and aloha.

Depending on the experience level, skillsets and preferences of the top candidates, we are open to the following scenarios to assure all areas of kuleana outline below are covered:

1 as staff at 30-40hrs/wk

2 people as part-time staff (i.e. 10-20hrs/wk)

1 part-time staff and 2-3 independent contractors (specific scope of work and deliverables) focusing on their specific areas of expertise (i.e. audio engineering, video production, project management)

Kuleana (Responsibilities) include, but are not limited to:

Contractor and Interns Oversight – Coordinate hiring, onboarding/training, scheduling, communications, and tracking deliverables as needed for A/V team members - which for any given project or event may include Independent contractors (dozens of intermediate to advanced level engineers and videographers who are a part of our ʻMana Maoli Collective - a few who are contracted at 20-50hrs/mo, and the rest are on a per project or per event basis

Project Management – Track tasks, timelines, priorities, and progress across multiple concurrent A/V projects and events.

Communication – Serve as a liaison between the A/V team and other internal/external teams/artists/partners, organizing meetings, calendars, and project updates.

Document Management – Organize and maintain digital files, footage libraries/hard drives, consent forms, shot lists, scripts, and other production materials.

Equipment Tracking – Manage and keep track of A/V gear and equipment on a regular basis

Creative Support – Assist with creative pre-production and planning, production (events, film shoots, recording sessions) and post-production - audio and/or video, if that aligns with your skills and interests.

Budget and Reporting Support – Review and approve monthly timesheets and invoices, and track/compile data for quarterly reports for funders, ensuring they are submitted accurately and on time.

Minimum Qualifications:

Must live on Oʻahu if applying for full-time position

At least 1 year experience in a management/leadership position overseeing staff, independent contractors and/or interns/volunteers

Basic background and/or strong interest and willingness to learn the basics of audio engineering and video production, to be able to best communicate with engineers/videographers, and to conduct onboarding/training of MM specific protocols

Strong Leadership, Communication (verbal and written), and project and task management skills

Strong desire to work with the Hawaiian community in a Hawaiian cultural context

Detail-oriented and able to handle multiple projects simultaneously

Flexible availability, including evening and weekend hours when needed for events (average once a month) or to meet grant deadlines (average 2-3 times a year).

Excellent people skills, able to work with a wide range of people and learning styles

Preferred Qualifications

Having 1 or more of the following qualifications is ‘nice but not necessary’, and may possibly serve as a tiebreaker among the top 3 candidates:

College degree (BA or higher)

3-5+ years of experience in a management/leadership position overseeing staff, independent contractors and/or interns/volunteers

5-10+ years of experience in audio engineering and/or video production with a strong understanding of video production in Adobe Premiere, DaVinci Resolve, or Final Cut Pro

2+ years of cumulative experience on film/video production sets or similar shoots

Proficiency in Asana or similar project and task management software

Experience working with youth, nonprofits and/or Hawaiian and other low-income communities

Proficient in Google Workspace Apps (Gmail, Drive, Sheets, Forms, etc.)

Familiarity with audio event production (quotes, line up, concerts needs, etc)

Proficiency in ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi and/or various aspects of Hawaiian culture

Available for inter-island travel to execute events at neighbor islands partner schools 1-3 times/year
