ABOUT THE POSITION:
The school is looking for a Security Officer who is responsible for providing safety and security at Hawai'i Preparatory Academy (HPA). This role involves a range of duties, including foot and vehicle patrols, inspection of fire prevention systems, and acting as a first responder in emergency situations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Perform observation and immediate reporting of life safety issues
Respond to calls and control access through Upper Campus' Kohala and Waimea gates
Control access on Village Campus' main driveway during academic hours
Approach and identify unknown/unrecognized elements on HPA property
Assist/facilitate dialogue between guests and appropriate department contacts
Identify and investigate untagged vehicles on campus
Provide event and sports security presence and parking assistance as required
Follow daily opening and closing procedures
Documentation, Distribution, and Communication of Information:
Utilize various communication tools, including Gmail, Google Drive, CrisisGo, radio, and smartphones
Review and respond to information provided promptly
Document and file information as necessary
Understand and comply with HPA's privacy policies
First Responders to Emergencies:
Call 911 when there is a threat to person(s) or property
Report crimes to 911 or relevant authorities
Adapt quickly and effectively to changing environments
Implement procedures during critical situations, such as Fire Watch
Understand and comply with HPA's Incident Command System
Loss Prevention:
Conduct regular patrols around HPA property
Secure and report open facilities
Report unattended "high valued" items
Observe and report incidents
Safety Inspections and Fire Prevention:
Document daily readings of fire suppression systems and kitchen equipment
Perform monthly inspections for fire and safety hazards, AEDs, and fire extinguishers
Report unsafe conditions and potential hazards
Assist with periodic drills for fire, earthquake, lockdowns, etc.
Required Qualifications and Skills:
High school diploma or equivalent
Current and valid DCCA GDE license card in good standing
Valid Hawai'i driver's license and clean driving abstract
Adult and Child CPR/AED/FA certified (training can be provided)
Proficient writing and verbal communication skills
Strong organizational and time management skills
Excellent comprehension and problem-solving abilities
Ability to de-escalate conflicts effectively
Good interpersonal skills for interactions with employees, students, parents, and guests
Ability to remain calm while enforcing policies and procedures during stressful situations
Physical Requirements:
Ability to frequently stand, sit, walk, run, and traverse uneven surfaces
Capable of lifting, moving, and placing objects up to 50 pounds
Ability to stand for extended periods of time
Perform satisfactorily in inclement weather conditions
Proficient use of safety equipment such as fire extinguishers, generators, bullhorn, etc.
Work Conditions:
Flexible working hours, including days, nights, overnights, weekends, and holidays
Work both indoors and outdoors
Exposure to adverse weather conditions (e.g., heat, cold, rain, wind)
Traversing irregular, sloping, steep, and slippery surfaces
