Posting End Date: at 11:59PM HST BRIEF POSTING DESCRIPTION: The P YI GENERATION ENGINEERING Department of the P POWER SUPPLY ENGINEERING Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has 1 Management vacancy available. (Role: Professional Supervisor) JOB FUNCTION: Directs, and supervises the Generation Engineers to provide technical knowledge, expertise, and guidance to safely optimize generating station equipment reliability and efficiency; and to support and manage O&M and capital projects and programs. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Provides leadership, supervision, and mentoring for the Generation Engineer teams. Manages a team of engineers to support the operating, maintenance, and equipment repair activities of major and/or critical power generation machinery to ensure availability to meet system demands. Supervises work of assigned personnel with regards to the investigation and troubleshooting of various equipment problems and to identify interim and permanent solutions. This includes generating unit and system response evaluations and analysis. Conducts on site field investigations as required ensuring safety policies, and procedures are being followed. Supports the Department to ensure all plant operating and maintenance practices are in compliance with all applicable federal and state regulations and codes.

Manages, directs, and monitors assigned department work and project management activities to ensure optimization of internal resources, forecasted capital and O&M budgets, and variances remain within targeted limits. Analyzes, monitors, and assists in the development of the division’s O&M / capital forecasts, including recommendations to determine appropriate internal staffing levels, tooling, material, and specialized consultant/contractor support services. Develops metrics, and key performance indicators to ensure projects, and programs are performing optimally.

Evaluates progress and performance of the engineering section staff and the results obtained. Manages and administers all personnel matters of the engineering section, including performance appraisals, conducting interviews for hiring personnel, recognition of employee achievements, and disciplinary actions. Develops and/or updates personnel training procedures, and work practice procedures.

Facilitates, coordinates, develops, and supports various LEAN, reliability and continuous improvement initiatives/processes/programs. Programs include Root Cause Failure Analysis program, BTFR/CCI program, Near Miss program, LEAN program activities, and Lessons Learned program. Collaborates with Operations, Maintenance, Planning, and other Departments to implement work process improvements.

Serves as a technical consultant to the Generation Department on various new technology developments in the power generation industry. Supports the Company’s R&D efforts through involvement with research projects and new technologies. Supports the roles and responsibilities of the assigned Deputy Section Chief or Section Leader of the Company’s Incident Command Team for emergency response and/or oil spill response.

Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge Requirements

Thorough knowledge Company policies (Safety & Health Manual, General Information Manual)

Working knowledge of collective bargaining agreement.

Working knowledge of applicable state and federal regulations/permits, laws and codes.

Thorough knowledge of the general design, operation, maintenance of power generation equipment, including steam electric power plants, combustion turbine, diesel electric power plants.

Thorough knowledge of Project Management principles, practices, and processes.

Thorough knowledge of reading civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering drawings, instrument control drawings, piping and instrumentation drawings.

Working knowledge of Company accounting practices (GAAP, account code, capital, O&M)

Thorough knowledge of personal computers and related software applications (MS Office, Visio, eMesa, Ellipse, PI Processbook)

Working knowledge of LEAN concepts and processes

Working knowledge of the National Incident Management System (NIMS) Incident Command System (ICS) regarding emergency response

Skills Requirements

Excellent oral and written communication skills

Supervisory/leadership skills and abilities to work with a variety of individuals dealing with sensitive, difficult, or confrontational issues.

Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of personnel, both verbally and in written communications.

Must have or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver's license. Must meet the standards for required driving positions stated in the Hiring Standards for Required Driving Positions policy.

Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and adapt to changing priorities.

In-depth equipment troubleshooting and testing skills.

In depth analytical, organization, and conceptual skills to handle various on-going projects, and programs.

Ability to utilize reference materials, drawings, instruction manuals, and historical information.

Strong interpersonal skills to influence and persuade various groups and individuals.

Experience Requirements

BS Degree in Engineering from an accredited college or a minimum 12 years of experience in electric utility engineering, operations and maintenance and project management or equivalent.

Minimum 6 years of power plant engineering experience or 6 years of power plant operations & maintenance experience.

Several years (3-5) of related work experience in a supervisory capacity.
