Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Fire Protection Technician to work in our Sitewide Fire Protection Technician department. Our team works a 4x10 schedule located across the INL site with every Friday off.You will perform the periodic inspections, tests and maintenance of fire detection, occupant notification, signal reporting and suppression systems. You will report directly to the manager of the Fire Protection Technician department.Responsibilities Include:
Inspect and test wet pipe and dry pipe sprinkler systems. Inspect standpipe systems, fire pumps, tanks, and fire mains for evidence of damage, deficiency, or impairment. Coordinate testing with other trades and specialties. Prepare related records and reports.
Plan, perform, and coordinate periodic inspections and tests of fire alarm systems and prepare related records and reports. Fire alarm systems may include suppression interfaces, networked control units, smoke control interfaces, air sampling systems, and multi-zone voice evacuation systems. Coordinate testing with other trades and specialties.
Participate in design reviews for modifications, new installations, and perform initial acceptance testing of fire protection systems. Review design efforts for Fire Protection equipment. Consult with manufacturers, vendors, engineering staff, and other technicians regarding electronic and water systems needing specific attention.
Participate in fire protection system work order (WO) planning and walk downs in all areas. Participate in pre-job and post-job briefings. Review and understand the WO and the specific work steps. Interpret drawings and provide field red lines to support configuration management of fire protection systems. Actively participate in the work management process and provide feedback to support continuous improvement.
Develop Fire Protection work packages and monitor project costs and schedules.
Coordinate the installation and perform maintenance of the fire protection systems including water-based, gaseous, and special hazard fire suppression systems, analog and digital fire alarm systems and devices, the industrial alarm system, and the evacuation system. Work on fire extinguishers and kitchen hood systems.
Provide site-wide fire protection services regardless of area assignment. Actively participate in the work management process and provide feedback to support continuous improvement throughout Life Safety Systems. Cross-train in all site areas and responsibilities to provide better overall service. Respond promptly to all backshift calls for service stipulated by NFPA.
Support requisitioning of materials for activities in assigned areas. Consult with manufacturers, vendors, engineering staff, and other technicians.
Minimum Requirements:
Level 2: High school diploma, or equivalency, and 2 years of relevant experience.
Level 3: High school diploma, or equivalency, and 4 years of relevant experience.
Experience with water-based systems and their components, fire alarm systems and their components, types of damage and deficiencies that may impact system operation, basic building features, system inspection and testing frequencies, requirements and procedures, use of appropriate tools and test equipment, working safely with minimal impact on surroundings, applicable codes and standards (primarily NFPA 72 and 25; impairment procedures), and reporting of findings.
Willingness and availability to respond, as required by NFPA, to all backshift calls for service.
NICET Level II- Inspection and Testing of Water-based Systems, NICET Level II- Inspection and Testing of Fire Alarm Systems, or NICET Level II- Fire Alarm Systems. If not presently NICET II certified, must be able to achieve (minimum) Level II within 1 year.
Valid driver's license.
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "L" clearance, which requires US Citizenship.
Preferred Requirements:
Idaho Fire Protection Sprinkler Fitter License per IDAPA 18.08.02.23 (requires1000 hrs per year for 3 consecutive years and successful written examination)
Job Information:
The pay range for this position is: Level 2 ($25.18/hr - $41.54/hr) / Level 3 ($29.46/hr - $48.61/hr). At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
