Position Summary

Under the direction of the Operations Supervisor/Transit Manager the Transit Driver is responsible for safely operating a transit vehicle. The primary objective of the position is to provide safe, reliable, and efficient public transportation. The applicant must have prior driving experience, have a neat appearance, be courteous and work well with people.

This position will primarily work the afternoon shift from 11: 30am to 7:30pm weekdays, and occasionally on Saturdays from 8:30am to 3:30pm

Operates a transit vehicle in a safe manner on a designated route and/or schedule, safely picking up and discharging passengers; regulating heating, cooling, lighting, and ventilating systems for passenger comfort. Must possess a functional knowledge of the demographics of the service area and operate a two-way radio in a professional manner, communicating issues and changing circumstances to dispatcher.

Maintains a good rapport with passengers, the general public and offers excellent customer service; greets customers in pleasant manner; gives information concerning routes, fares, schedules and transfers.

Collects and counts fares; collects data such as passenger surveys, trip completion reports and safety reports involving observed accidents, hazards or other circumstances requiring the dispatcher’s attention.

Follows City safety and operational rules and procedures. Performs pre-trip vehicle inspections checking fluids and tires; conducting checks during and after operation to note damage or defects regarding body damage, tires, radiator, lights, instruments, brakes, radio, and other equipment; documenting defect information.

Attends training and/or informational meetings, cleans buses routinely and cleans shelters, and assists in office when available or has free time.

Minimum Qualifications

A high school diploma, GED or equivalent is required. Five years minimum experience with the safe operation of passenger cars, trucks or other motorized vehicles in a variety of weather conditions is required. A safe driving history plus the ability to obtain a valid DOT Medical Examination certificate prior to hire is required. Two (2) years in transit or similar agency as a driver preferred. A valid Commercial Driver's License of at least a Class C is required, with passenger endorsement and a valid Medical Examination Card.

Knowledge & Abilities

Demonstrate excellent driving skills, work under stress and meet strict timelines, and handle bus transfers and other paperwork. Ability to accept direction and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers and the public.

Knowledge of all appropriate federal/state/local regulations/policies (i.e., ADA, DOT, etc.) and able to work a flexible schedule.

Strong commitment to customer service and safety and a demonstrated sensitivity to a diverse group of patrons including the elderly and disabled. Ability to deal with the public in a pleasant manner remaining calm in adverse weather conditions, crowded traffic conditions and in dealing with irate or disorderly passengers.

Ability to operate a passenger lift and safely secure mobility devices using a 4-point tie-down system, as well as cooperate an electronic tablet to track ridership, fares, etc. and handle transfers.

Observe passenger activities in the bus and at the bus stop, and take appropriate action as needed. Operate a two-way radio and relay information to dispatch/other drivers.

Able to report to work on time and in proper uniform and maintain a strong attendance record. Ability to write reports in a coherent, legible manner.

Be subjected to DOT random drug & alcohol testing and be able to pass a drug screen and background check upon offer of employment.

Must maintain DOT required credentials and certifications.
