Job DescriptionLocation: Chicago, ILHospital: RUSH University Medical CenterDepartment: Liver TransplantationWork Type: Full Time (Total FTE between 0.9 and 1.0)Shift: Shift 1Work Schedule: 8 Hr (8:00:00 AM - 5:00:00 PM)Summary:The Supervisor, Organ Placement RN is a registered nurse who provides leadership and direct oversite to the Organ Placement Clinical Coordinators and Referral Management team within the Transplant department. The Supervisor provides leadership and direction while managing to day-to-day operations, inclusive of 24/7 direct team accountability. The individual who holds this position exemplifies the Rush mission, vision, and values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures.Other information:Required Job Qualifications: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Nursing from an accredited nursing program required. Current State of Illinois Registered Nurse licensure required. Ability to perfom the Transplant Coordinator or Organ Placement Coordinator role. BLS/CPR certification must be current. Five years of nursing experience required. One year of organ failure/transplant experience. Earned Nursing Degree at the Baccalaureate level or higher for those hired after January 1, 2014. All transfers to Rush University Medical Center or Rush University Medical Group from other Rush entities must have an earned nursing degree at the baccalaureate level or higher prior to the transfer. Analytical ability. Communication skills are required in order to lead and teach. Ability to interact effectively with others in difficult situations. Participate in an on-call rotation. Ability to work effectively as a team member. The ability to check documents for errors, use a keyboard to enter or retrieve data, and closely examine specimens, images or reports. Incumbent will also be responsible for performing the same duties as the Organ Placement Clinical Coordinators and will be included in any on call rotations, weekends, and Holiday coverage.Preferred Job Qualifications: Previous supervisory experience. National Certification. Two years of medical/surgical experience. One year of organ failure/transplant experience. Certified Clinical Transplant Nurse.Physical Demands: Ability to walk throughout the Medical Center and to be standing or walking most of the designated shift. Lifting or carrying objects 35-40lbs. and lifting and positioning patients, some of whom may exceed 300 lbs. Work conditions include performing procedures where carelessness could result in injury or illness and/or contact with potentially infectious materials and/or strong chemical agents.Responsibilities: Applies knowledge of the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS)/ Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN), the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Condition of Participation (CoP) for Transplant Programs, and the Joint Commission governing organ donation and transplantation in the U.S. is required to ensure adherence to all regulations. Oversees operational efficiency and utilization of labor resources. Direct oversite consists of the evaluation of deceased donor organ offers, waitlist review and patient selection, donor-recipient matching, informed consent procedures for organ offers and acceptance, and all aspects of the coordination, planning, and follow-up on organ offers, procurement, and transplantation procedures. Manages the schedule of organ call team donor coordinators to ensure 24 X 7 X 365 coverage. Facilitates positive conversations among staff when required to meet coverage needs or flex shifts. Utilizes evidence-based nursing interventions during telephone encounters, and electronic communications according to state regulations, regulatory agency standards, and organizational policies and procedures. Communicates current evidence-based strategies, standards of care and protocols with direct reports. Provides timely guidance and feedback to help others strengthen specific knowledge/skill areas needed to develop, accomplish a task, or solve a problem. Participates in and contributes to system quality initiatives, research, development of care protocols and evidence-based activities that improve patient care and outcomes. Works with teams to develop, implement and track results of quality improvement activities contributing to overall quality of care and regulatory requirements. Manages team of direct reports and provides develop plans and discipline when needed. Responsible for annual reviews of staff. Monitors errors in regulatory requirements and completes a thorough review, including a corrective action plan Establishes staffing schedules and ensures adequate coverage for organ allocation and referral management teams. Serves as a resource person and provides information to staff regarding policy and procedure change. Acts as a liaison between departments managers, technical staff, patients, information services, patient relations, etc. Creates and maintains appropriate documentation for transplant candidacy and post-transplant follow-up care in accordance with CMS and UNOS requirements, in required timelines. Participates in survey-readiness and understands and complies with regulatory requirements of planning, regulatory, inspecting agencies, and solid organ transplant policies (Medicare Conditions of Participation; Department of Health Services; Joint Commission; United Network for Organ Sharing). Demonstrates ability to dialogue with surveyors effectively. Actively participates in CMS Transplant focused and UNOS surveys, during interviews and patient tracer audits providing evidence to show regulatory requirements are being meet. Reviews workflows on an ongoing basis to eliminate waste and improve efficiency. Works with staff to identify and achieve cost savings. Structures a learning environment and makes time for staff to attend education activities. Develops an orientation plan for each new employee, provides coaching for preceptors, and monitors staff progress and documentation of competency achievement.
