Horror Magazine Seeking Staff Writers

Monstrous Femme is looking for staff writers. We're an online magazine centered on women's horror and queer horror, though we also publish cross-genre and horror-adjacent works. Creativity is encouraged. No word minimums, no word maximums. We're specifically seeking women writers and writers from the LGBTQIA+ community. Stories do not need to center on women, queer characters, and/or social issues, but such works are highly encouraged.

Additionally, we're seeking nonfiction writers for first-person essays about personal experiences (especially those that relate to gender and/or sexuality, or real-life horror stories, though other topics are welcome too). Writers are encouraged to be frank and raw in their nonfiction works—don't worry about likability. This magazine is intended for marginalized people to be vulnerable and honest, without fear of judgment.

Lastly, we are also seeking reviewers for horror movies, shows, books, and/or video games, particularly those that prominently feature women and/or LGBTQIA+ characters.

Requirements:

One short story, one first-person essay/article, or one review per edition. Since editions will be released seasonally, this will mean you are expected to write and submit at least one story, essay, or review every three months.

What you'll get:

We're non-monetized and 100% volunteer-based, so unfortunately we can't pay, but no one will make any money off your work. We are also open to monetizing the magazine in the future. If that happens, all staff members will be compensated. You will also retain full rights to your work, so you'll be able to publish pieces elsewhere if desired.

While we can't offer financial benefits, you will get to be part of a very fun, special project with a supportive community of writers, editors, and creatives trying to make something inclusive and positive, using the horror genre as a tool to empower marginalized people and to challenge the genre's existing anxieties around women/queer people. You'll get access to our Discord, where you'll be able to brainstorm ideas and have conversations with like-minded people. And, of course, you'll get your writing published and gain exposure + experience working for an online magazine.

If interested, please reply to this ad with the position you're interested in: Horror Fiction Writer, Nonfiction Personal Essayist, or Media Reviewer. Send us, at a minimum, two relevant samples of your work, either as attachments or links to published pieces. Then please tell us a little about yourself: your interest in horror, your writing experience, why this gig appeals to you, why you think you'd be a good fit, and whether or not you can commit to sending in one piece every three months. No previous experience with professional publishing is expected or required. Thank you!
