Job DescriptionThe Health and Safety Coordinator is responsible for planning, implementing and overseeing the employee health and safety policies and programs for the Department with the objective of minimizing accidents and injuries. This position reports directly to the Conservation and Recreation Division Administrator.Responsibilities of the job include:Program Development, Implementation and Employee Training
Developing, reviewing and updating policies to promote a culture of occupational health and safety awareness;
Providing recommendations to Department leadership for improving safety in the workplace;
Identifying safety training requirements and developing health and safety training plans for employees in all job classes;
Educating employees on safety standards and expectations as well as safe equipment operation; and,
-Conducting safety training within the scope of his/her experience and certification.
Providing oversight and technical support to other health and safety staff, including the Department’s
Health and Safety Committees, by answering questions and ensuring that health and safety messaging, staff training and site audits are consistent throughout all parts of the Department.
Site Audits
Conducting risk assessments/safety audits at 200+ Department facility locations statewide on a routine basis to identify workplace hazards;
Verifying that assessment or audit findings are addressed in a timely manner; and,
Collaborating with managers to monitor compliance and identify safety issues.
Documenting incidents and follow up
Maintaining documentation of the Department's safety procedures, accidents and related events
Preparing and presenting reports on accidents and violations and determining causes;
Keeping records of safety-related incidents and proposing corrective actions; and,
Tracking incidents, identifying trends to determine probable cause, and recommending preventive actions such as changes to equipment, operations and procedures to eliminate hazardous conditions.
Maintaining and expanding upon professional competence by staying up to date on new state and federal health and safety regulations, attending relevant training and researching regulatory requirements, industry standards and health and safety best practices. Assesses need for training, develops training modules and conducts training for staff.
Leads special committee meetings, sets agendas and follows up on action items.
Utilizes databases, spreadsheets and applications to manage and analyze data.
