Assistant Yard Manager

SUMMARY: Supervise and coordinate activities of workers engaged in yard duties (e.g. loading, unloading, storing, counting and transferring inventory, safety, etc.). Support the distribution and shipping of materials, such as Lumber, Building Materials, Millwork, etc.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Yard workers, Load builders

DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:

Promote and practice our company safety policies, practices and procedures; report any unsafe equipment or working conditions to management

Guide, lead and coordinate the building and preparing of all orders – this includes supervising all load builders and yard worker work

Coordinate with Dispatcher on setting daily schedules; and occasionally build loads, assist customers, and load/unload trucks as needed to improve turnaround times and customer satisfaction

Assist in inventory maintenance by means of organization, periodic counts, monitoring stock levels and reporting damages and problems as soon as possible to leadership

Train all yard personnel on proper and safe practices for building loads (e.g. loading, strapping, and unloading of material) and material storage (e.g. yard layout, stocking, facing, straightening, and cleaning or any other task necessary to maintain products within lumberyard)

Ensure all loads are checked for accuracy and secured for delivery, document discrepancies and update records accordingly

Maintain cleanliness and safety of the yard and equipment

Manage yard equipment (e.g. forklifts, etc.) - logistics, utilization/storage, maintenance/repair scheduling, inspections, certifications, etc.

Ensure daily that all material is stored and secured to prevent weather damage and theft

Provide input on the performance of assigned employees to management

Back-up the inspection of incoming materials and verify receiving documents, when needed

Analyze and resolve work problems or assist workers in solving work problems

Suggest changes in traffic flow, yard layout, and use of equipment to increase efficiency in the yard

Perform other duties, as assigned

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:

Fork Lift Operator

Ability to work well with others, maintain professional interactions with co-workers, vendors, and customers.

Skills in leading and engaging others to perform expected tasks for the department

Problem solving skills

QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

High School Diploma or equivalent. Forklift Operator Certified. Minimum of three (3) years’ experience yard operations or equivalent education and experience; knowledge of building materials is a plus.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Must be able to lift, carry, push or pull up to 50 pounds; and occasionally up to 100 pounds. Repeatedly sit, stand, climb, bend, balance, stoop, kneel, and crouch. Occasionally, twist and turn using proper techniques to protect body.

Work will be a mix of prolonged periods working outdoors with exposure to heavy traffic, elevated noise, extreme weather conditions and possible risk of exposure to hazardous chemicals, and sometime working inside controlled environments.
