Position Title: Elementary Building Principal Immediate Supervisor: Associate Superintendent Summary (Job Goal): Be dedicated to the development of lifelong learners by providing leadership, supervisory, and administrative skills that will promote the education development of each student. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Other duties may be assigned.)Promotes Success of all Students (Shared Vision)

Support the vision and mission of the District as well as building vision that sets high expectations for students and staff.

Work with various members of the central administrative staff on initiatives and projects of District-wide importance.

Understand, support, and help implement change efforts at the District and/or building level.

Provide leadership and supervision of certified staff and encourage creative and innovative research-based instruction.

Develop communication strategies to inform staff, parents, students, community members, and all stakeholders of progress towards the vision and mission of the District.

Ensure the school community is involved in the school improvement efforts.

Culture of Learning

Establish and maintain an effective learning climate in the school.

Know and support the building/district school improvement plan and accurately interpret and report progress on goals to stakeholders.

Structure regular and systematic classroom observations to increase teacher effectiveness; maintain a culture of high expectations and demand high quality of performance from all staff members.

Provide support in mentoring teachers at all skill levels.

Develop team-building, problem solving and organizational skills among staff.

Conduct staff meetings as appropriate for proper functioning of the school.

Develop a professional rapport and good working relationship with all staff members.

Cooperate with college and university officials regarding teacher training and preparation.

Ensure professional development promotes a focus on student learning consistent with the school vision and goals.

Assist in the implementation of school curriculum and the evaluation of instructional materials.

Motivate and recognize staff and students’ accomplishments and achievements toward desired goals and objectives.

Ensure that technology is used effectively in teaching and learning.

Use multiple sources of data to develop a plan for the improvement of student achievement and assess student learning using a variety of research-based techniques.

Assist in the implementation of supportive services in meeting the needs of students and staff.

Oversee the maintenance of accurate records on the progress and attendance of students.

Ensure barriers to student learning are identified and addressed.

Provide students with multiple learning opportunities to ensure all students are successful.

Keep abreast of changes and developments in the profession by attending professional meetings, reading professional journals and other publications and discussing problems of mutual interest with others in the field.

Be involved in administrative groups at the area educational agency and state levels.

Accept constructive criticism and suggestions and seek to improve each performance responsibility.

Management

Assume responsibility for and support the implementation of Board Policy and administrative regulations keeping staff informed of changes in policy and procedures which affect them.

Maintain accurate records as required by federal, state, and local officials.

Adhere to applicable state and federal laws, rules and regulations, Board Policies and Administrative Regulations.

Manage negotiated and contractual agreements effectively.

Oversee daily operations to meet District, building and student goals.

Delegate authority and responsibility where appropriate.

Manage the school’s total needs in requisitioning equipment and supplies within the funds allocated as well as administration of the overall building budget.

Plan and supervise fire drills and emergency preparedness program.

Direct the activities of all assigned staff members to include supervision and evaluation.

Prepare and/or supervise the preparation of reports, records, and all other necessary paperwork.

Maintain and control the funds generated by student activities and auxiliary services.

Assume responsibility for the safety and security of the building and maintain a safe learning environment for all students and staff. Provide for accurate inventories of property to ensure systems operate safely, efficiently, and effectively.

Utilize knowledge of learning, teaching and student development to make management decisions.

Address and resolve problems / issues in a timely manner.

Develop and implement a positive, effective student management system.

Maintain high standards of student conduct and develop and enforce an effective student discipline plan as necessary according to due process.

Participate in management team meetings and activities.

Report to the central office regularly concerning the needs of the school with respect to personnel, transportation, equipment, supplies and curriculum.

Consult regularly for the services of central office / resource personnel so that professional staff can receive effective assistance when needed.

Keep the Superintendent informed of the building’s activities and events as well as activities of an unusual nature.

Assist in screening, hiring, in-service orientation, assigning, evaluating, and dismissing school staff as outlined by the Board Policy, negotiated agreements and District procedures.

Family and Community

Maintain a positive image for the school as well as good public relations within the community.

Engage the community to create shared responsibility for student and school success.

Maintain a positive rapport with students, staff, and community and promote and support their involvement in the school.

Discuss student developmental progress, problems, behavior incidents, and academic achievement with parents in an honest, sensitive, and confidential manner.

Connect students and families to the health, human and social services they need to stay focused on learning.

Demonstrate professionalism in fulfilling the responsibilities of the principal position.

Demonstrate a positive approach toward school, students and principal position and communicate the same to the community.

Cooperate with and work in a courteous manner with central office, co-workers and other personnel.

Supervisory Responsibilities:Supervise and evaluate teachers, custodial staff, and/or educational assistants. Minimum Education or Experience (Will vary depending on specific position):M.A. degree and a minimum of 5 years teaching experience at the level.Successful administrative experience preferred.Cross cultural experience preferred. Licensure or Certification:Valid Iowa Teaching License.Valid administrative license (appropriate to level).Valid Iowa evaluator approval.
