For Drosophila (fruit flies), this includes maintaining stock populations, making fly food, managing disposal, labeling, maintaining CO2 tanks, and checking/maintaining incubators. This can also include creating new transgenic fly lines under the guidance of the PI. For cells (RPE-1), this includes cell splitting, creating new media, maintaining CO2 tanks, and checking/maintaining incubators.
45% Lab Organization and Maintenance
This includes ordering, organizing, making stock solutions (e.g. buffers), keeping electronic inventory, autoclaving/cleaning glass and plastic-ware, and general lab upkeep (including cleaning). This part of the job will be done in partial collaboration with the PI to ensure the correct inventory and safety of the lab.
20% Research and Projects
This includes helping the PI and other lab members with their research projects. This can include (but is not limited to) the imaging, labeling, collection, and measuring of flies or cells, setting up genetic fly crosses, transfecting cells, using kits, and basic molecular biology assays.

Position Overview:The Dalton lab in the Department of Molecular Biosciences at the University of Kansas (Lawrence, KS) is seeking an assistant researcher with interest in molecular biology, genetics, and rare disease. The successful applicant will work within a research group that examines the function of essential genes on a wide variety of rare diseases.
