Serves as a senior member of the Executive Director’s senior leadership team, assisting in the development, implementation and evaluation of organizational goals, objectives, and policies or procedures for Housing & Residence Life.

Provides vision and leadership to ensure delivery of high-quality residential programs, including direct supervision and evaluation of 4-6 full-time staff members and the delivery of KU’s on-campus residential experience. Indirectly supervises 30 live-in professionals (both full-time and graduate assistants) and 160 undergraduate staff (RAs, Proctors, Food Board Managers.)

Communicates daily with other functional areas in Housing & Residence Life (occupancy, administration, operations) to align efforts and ensure efficient delivery of services to students and staff.

Incorporates university, divisional, and departmental priorities and learning outcomes in all areas of practice and implementation of the Residence Life program.

Leads retention efforts for Housing & Residence Life to ensure that living on-campus is a catalyst for students’ academic and personal success at KU.

Routinely collaborates with student service programs and other offices at KU to ensure seamless delivery to constituents and to maximize student support efforts.

Ensures positive human relations, respect, appreciation, inclusiveness, and celebration of diversity, by example and through the implementation of effective programs that align with university strategic goals and priorities.

Works collaboratively to develop and implement assessment efforts for Housing & Residence Life to measure effectiveness and success of initiatives throughout all areas. Aligns departmental assessment efforts with Student Affairs efforts. Ensures that student satisfaction surveys and quality of on-campus living is measured through annual engagement with residential students.

Engages the Residence Life team in routine professional development.

Meets regularly with student leaders and provides advising support for leadership organizations in Housing & Residence Life.

25% Student Support, Conduct, and Emergency Response

Provides leadership and oversight for all residence life functions around student support, crises, and emergencies in Housing & Residence Life facilities.

Serves as a member of the campus Student of Concern Review Team based in Student Affairs, using NABITA standards to assess risk levels and support measures needed for student and community safety.

Works collaboratively with other offices such as Student Support and Case Management, Student Conduct and Community Standards, Office of Civil Rights and Title IX, Counseling & Psychological Services, and KU Police Department.

Meets regularly with staff in Student Conduct and Community Standards to align university and residential conduct processes and to ensure that Housing staff are meeting expectations regarding case management and conduct adjudication. Serve as an appeal officer for Housing & Residence Life.

Manages on-call and crisis response systems within Housing & Residence Life, and in coordination with the Student Affairs on-call system and KU Police Department Office

Develops policies and procedures for crisis and student response, ensuring compliance and best practice in implementation by all areas of Housing & Residence Life.

Ensures staff are fully trained and act within relevant compliance rules and regulations (Title IX, FERPA, Clery, NCAA, etc.) and maintain privacy with respect to student information.

Communicates with stakeholders on behalf of Housing & Residence Life to clarify processes and support their needs both during and after a crisis or emergency event. This includes direct communication to students, parents, and other impacted community members.

Responsible for data collection and reporting for on-campus housing facilities to KU’s Annual Security and Fire Safety Report.

As needed, serves as a member of the on-call rotation within Housing & Residence Life.

25% Administration and Collaboration

Leads recruitment, hiring, and onboarding processes for all positions working in Residence Life areas. Routinely reviews position descriptions to align efficiencies between areas and ensure that expectations align with department and university priorities.

Oversees training and development programs for all residence life areas that focus on position-specific responsibilities and the interconnectedness of roles to other HRL and KU functions. Works with both internal and external campus partners to promote KU and departmental priorities to align team members and provide clear and consistent expectations for staff.

Provides overall leadership and direction to all aspects of customer service and experience for residence life staff. Works collaboratively with other Housing & Residence Life staff to ensure open lines of communication and continuous support for residents and their families.

Establishes and maintains collaborative, effective relationships with all campus partners, including areas such as Student Conduct and Community Standards, KU Police Department, Student Support and Case Management, Sexual Assault and Prevention Center, Watkins Health Center, Kansas Athletics, Counseling & Psychological Services, KU Memorial Unions, International Student Services, Admissions, Financial Aid and Scholarships, Jayhawk Academic Advising, Student Access Center, and Orientation and Transition Programs.

Responsible for direct oversight of residence life budgets, including hall operating, student programming, and scholarship hall food budgets.

Represents Housing & Residence Life to other departments on campus.

Convenes and facilitates regular meetings with student leaders and stakeholders to Housing & Residence Life to present items such as budgetary information, annual room rate proposals, and handbooks updates in order to gather student feedback and support, and gauge overall student satisfaction with their experience living in Housing & Residence Life

Participates on departmental and university-wide committees, planning groups, task forces, etc.

10% Additional Duties

Assists the Executive Director of Housing & Residence Life in other designated responsibilities or with special projects.

Maintains active involvement in professional associations to promote both personal interests and Housing & Residence Life’s overall commitment to the housing and residence life field.

Acts in the absence of the Executive Director, as requested or needed.

Performs other duties as assigned.
