SUBSTITUTIONS: Training as a mechanic from a trade school, vocational-technical school, or military school will substitute for the required experience. SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Direct from a Mechanic Supervisor or higher level maintenance personnel. SUPERVISION EXERCISED: None. LOCATION OF WORK: May be used by all state agencies. JOB DISTINCTIONS: Differs from Trades Apprentice by the presence of independent performance of routine preventive maintenance and repair of small engines and mobile equipment in a non-trainee capacity. Differs from Mechanic 2 by the absence of independent responsibility on major components such as engines, transmissions, differentials, etc. Examples of WorkEXAMPLES BELOW ARE A BRIEF SAMPLE OF COMMON DUTIES ASSOCIATED WITH THIS JOB TITLE. NOT ALL POSSIBLE TASKS ARE INCLUDED.Performs entry level repair/maintenance and inspection related activities on vehicles and heavy construction equipment. Assists higher level mechanics in working on a variety of mobile equipment and vehicles. May also be responsible for repair and maintenance of equipment powered by small internal combustion engines such as: lawnmowers, string trimmers, outboard motors, etc. Tasks may include spark plug replacement, carburetor cleaning, starter repair, and filter replacement. Removes and cleans fuel tanks. May maintain inventory of tools, instruments, and supplies.
