Evaluates unit staffing levels making adjustments as indicated, evaluates patient care activities, interprets departmental policies, serves as a clinical and managerial role model, and is accountable for operating, personnel, and patient care decisions during shifts. Represents Management/Administration in their absence. Supervises and evaluates all staff throughout the facility during shift. Acts as a liaison between departments coordinates activities and personnel. EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE; CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE:Graduate of an accredited school of nursing and currently licensed to practice in the State of Washington. Minimum of five (5) years of recent acute care nursing experience. Requires current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and Advanced Cardiac Life Support ( ACLS) certification within 30 days of hire date. Must obtain Neonatal Resuscitation Provider (NRP) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification within six months of hire date. Must complete National Incident Management System IS 100 and 700 within 60 days of employment.SPECIAL EQUIPMENT, SKILLS, OR OTHER REQUIREMENTS:Good communication and interpersonal skills. Basic nurse management and leadership skills. Ability to organize and prioritize multiple issues. WORK ENVIRONMENT AND HAZARDS:Hazards include risk of exposure to communicable diseases, blood and body fluids, hazardous substances, and risk of physical injury from lifting patients and operation of equipment.WORK CONTACT GROUP: All departments, patients, families, visitors, and medical staff.SPECIAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:Light to moderate lifting. Stands and walks for extended periods. Must be able to bend, stoop, push and pull. Must possess visual, tactile touch, and manual dexterity.SUPERVISED BY: Administrative Supervisor Coordinator and Chief Nursing OfficerSUPERVISES: Nursing personnel, ancillary, and support staff in absence of direc­tors/managers.Essential Functions:

In conjunction with Nursing Leadership, identifies the number and level of personnel required to provide patient care in the assigned units, and initiates changes in personnel and assignments as indicated. Assists with unit staffing needs and scheduling, as needed.

Performs nursing rounds to assess the quality of patient care delivered by staff and to identify problems and needs on the nursing units under his/her jurisdiction.

Evaluates the physical environment under his/her jurisdiction for cleanliness and safety hazards and responds appropriately.

Serves on inter and intradepartmental committees and special task forces.

Participates in the development of Patient Care Services policy, goals, objectives, standards and patient classification systems.

Interprets, supports and recommends hospital policies and procedures, objectives, standards and philosophy to nursing personnel.

Demonstrates excellent clinical nursing skills; serves as a consultant and role model for nursing personnel.

Uses an understanding of the principles of growth and development to assess each patient's age specific needs and provide age specific treatment and care.

Reports problems and unusual situations to the appropriate unit manager, and escalates issues as appropriate to the Administrator on Call during off hours,and keeps them informed of situations requiring follow-up or specific attention.

Evaluates the quality of nursing care by direct observation on nursing rounds, by reviewing patient records, interviewing, and observing, and by participating in Quality Improvement activities, such as required chart audits and review.

Investigates and follows through on complaints and incident reports in collaboration with management. Provides support for patient advocacy related to patient complaints and grievances.

Coaches and counsels’ staff, and/or reports disciplinary issues to the appropriate manager according to need and policy.

Deals with conflict in a positive manner, diffusing potential problems.

Participates in required and voluntary continuing education programs to reach professional growth objectives, and to maintain certification and credentialing.

Demonstrates ability to implement internal and external disaster plans,and directs emergency situations.

Acts as a liaison between hospital departments to communicate information, report changes and suggestions, and represent Administration and management during assigned shift.

Demonstrates attitudes and/or behaviors in interacting with others that are courteous, polite, concerned, friendly and respectful, resulting in favorable patient, physician and staff perceptions of the hospital and its employees.

Promotes teamwork and cooperation through participation in patient care activities, patient assignments, and staff assistance. Provides support to assure patient care activities are completed.

Plans for effective shift changes. Directs staff and assures compliance with departmental standards for the completion of shift change walking rounds in each patient room.

Provides support to clinical and hospital operational needs, such as ongoing clinical education, infection control and employee health, emergency preparedness.

Provides support for clinical chart abstraction/audits as requested for special projects such as root cause analysis, patient grievances, regulatory compliance, and quality measures and metrics.

Additional duties as assigned.
