JOB SUMMARY
The Steward/Dishwasher plays a vital support role within the Notre Dame Seminary Dining Services team. This position ensures the kitchen operates in a clean, safe, and organized manner by maintaining dishwashing and sanitation standards, assisting in deep cleaning tasks, and supporting the overall cleanliness and functionality of the back-of-house environment. The Steward is expected to work independently and efficiently while maintaining a positive and team-oriented attitude. This role is crucial to the smooth operation of all meal services and events, ensuring that all equipment, utensils, and service ware are cleaned and stored properly. The Steward will also be responsible for keeping kitchen and dish areas sanitized and organized and assisting with routine kitchen tasks as directed by the Executive Chef.
JOB DUTIES
Operate commercial dishwashing equipment to clean dishes, utensils, cookware, and kitchen tools, ensuring proper sanitation standards are met.
Wash and sanitize pots, pans, sheet trays, and other large kitchen items manually when necessary.
Collect and transport dirty dishes, glassware, and utensils from service areas to the dishwashing area.
Maintain cleanliness and organization of dish area, mop sinks, and floors regularly.
Empty trash, recycling, and compost bins, and ensure proper disposal in designated areas.
Maintain cleanliness of kitchen equipment and surrounding areas, including deep cleaning as scheduled or assigned.
Follow all safety procedures regarding chemical use and storage, including proper labeling and usage of cleaning agents.
Assist with putting away and organizing deliveries and supplies in dry storage, refrigerators, and freezers.
Notify the Executive Chef of any equipment malfunctions, safety hazards, or shortages of cleaning supplies.
Clean kitchen floors, walls, and equipment surfaces daily and assist in larger cleaning tasks as part of scheduled deep cleaning routines.
Help maintain a clean and sanitary environment in accordance with local health codes and kitchen safety standards.
Assist kitchen staff with basic prep work or tasks as directed, particularly during downtime or slower periods.
Support a culture of respect, cleanliness, and professionalism in all kitchen operations.
Demonstrate flexibility in taking on different cleaning and kitchen support tasks as needed.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and maintain efficiency.
Must be dependable, punctual, and committed to cleanliness and sanitation standards.
Understanding of safe dishwashing practices and operation of commercial dish machines.
Knowledge of basic food safety and sanitation procedures.
Ability to follow instructions and complete tasks thoroughly and on time.
Willingness to perform physically demanding work, including standing for long periods, lifting up to 50 lbs., and working in hot or wet conditions.
Must be able to bend, stoop, reach, and twist frequently throughout shift.
Ability to work in a fast-paced kitchen environment and handle multiple tasks with professionalism.
Positive attitude and a strong work ethic, with a willingness to support team members.
Availability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays, and special events as needed.
