As part of The Department of Professional and Financial Regulation, our office provides many challenging opportunities to work in a career that involves insurance regulation and compliance. The Bureau’s Property and Casualty Division investigates consumer complaints, regulates insurance contracts, and provides educational information about property and casualty insurance products, including homeowners, automobile, and various lines of business insurance. TheDeputy Director openingis an exciting opportunity to work with a knowledgeable team that assists many stakeholders, including Maine’s citizens and businesses. Primary responsibilities include:

This is administrative and supervisory work involving the review of rate, rule and form filings of property and casualty insurers.

Resolving property and casualty consumer complaints.

Monitoring competition in the property and casualty insurance market.

Overseeing performance of the SERFF database.

Participates in Bureau Outreach events.

Reviews and maintains P&C checklists and assists with brochures.

Serving as liaison with other state agencies and outside entities, including other regulators, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners and insurance companies.

Drafts and recommends new and revised laws, rules, and regulations in order to respond to changes in the property and casualty market.

Provides technical assistance and information to other divisions, agencies, and requesting parties in order to answer questions and provide expertise in the area of property and casualty insurance.

Skills or knowledge required:

Ability to interpret and explain property and casualty insurance rules, regulations, market trends, and related technical information to lay people.

Experience working with or reviewing insurance companies' rating plans and/or form filings.

Ability to supervise subordinate personnel.

Experience working with insurance companies' representatives.

Experience handling consumer complaints.

Ability to communicate effectively.

Ability to write clearly and effectively.

Minimum qualifications:A Bachelors Degree in Math, Statistics, Economics, or a directly related field and four (4) years of experience working with insurance companies' rating plans and/or filings including at least two (2) years of experience which dealt with property and casualty insurance rating plans and/or filings. Directly related professional experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.
