POSITION PURPOSE
The Building & Grounds Coordinator’s primary responsibility is serving as the Children’s
Museum & Theatre of Maine’s (CMTM) “handyperson” and ensuring a high-quality visitor
experience by coordinating the caretaking of CMTM’s building and property. This
position is responsible for the general upkeep and maintenance of CMTM’s building and
grounds, including cleaning and repairs when needed.
POSITION SUMMARY
Responsible for coordinating:
● Building & grounds maintenance and cleaning schedules
● Communications with building vendors including HVAC, elevator, plumbing,
electrical, cleaning, security, snow removal, landscaping, and waste
management.
● The safety of CMTM's Design Shop, including training shop staff with varying
experience levels, maintaining shop inventory, coordinating a cleaning schedule
between shop staff, inspecting tools and equipment for safety, and overseeing tool
maintenance (Note: this coordination is done in collaboration with Theatre and
Exhibits teams)
Responsible for supporting the Visitor Engagement Director with:
● Annual and project-based contracts for vendors
● Tracking and projection of expenses relating to the Building & Grounds budget
● Training of new Building & Grounds Associates and Assistants
Responsible for hands-on tasks and specialized knowledge including:
● Apply expert knowledge of building repairs and the use of power tools
● Assist Exhibits, Theatre, and other teams with tool use and maintenance needs
● Apply knowledge and expertise in building systems with special emphasis on
HVAC
● Support Building & Grounds Assistants and Associates in carrying out
maintenance and cleaning tasks
● Regularly clean and organize CMTM’s design shop
● Support Exhibits and Theatre teams on projects as needed (i.e. theatre set builds
and exhibits upgrades/repairs)
● Support Building & Grounds volunteers and quarterly building improvement work
days
● Routinely inspect building for damage and hazards and carry out/facilitate repairs
as needed
● Routinely monitor janitorial and general building supplies and maintain restocking
schedule
● Set up and clean up events and rentals, including lifting and moving tables and
chairs
Additional duties include but are not limited to:
● Conduct 2-3 weekly floor checks to engage with visitors
● Participates in various forms of professional development
● Participates in annual reviews
● Support CMTM’s Strategic Plan and Goals through actions as identified by the
team and supervisor
● Perform other duties as identified by supervisor
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
● Strong knowledge and hands-on experience with building repairs with a focus on:
o safe use of power tools
o solid understanding of basic plumbing, HVAC, and electrical
o woodworking
o wall patching & basic painting
o note: this position would not be asked to perform plumbing or electrical
work, but would be responsible for identifying issues and suggesting
when an expert in these areas might be needed.
● Direct experience with children ages 0-14 a plus
● Occasional weekend support for building emergencies (any additional hours
would be compensated)
● Comfort with Google Suite and Google Calendar a plus

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF WORKPLACE / ROLE
● Ability to climb a ladder up to 16 feet
● Ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly

sanding, and more.
● Use of hands and arms for reaching, steadying, and lifting objects.
● Regularly required to crouch or kneel for short periods of time
● The noise level in the workplace is usually moderate

SCHEDULE
28 hours per week split between Monday to Friday with an emphasis on Monday &
Tuesday, and the ability to flex hours to weekends occasionally as needed for
emergency service (exact hours to be mutually determined)
(CMTM is closed to the public Monday afternoon and Tuesday)
COMPENSATION
$24.25 / hour plus $7,000 annual benefit pay which can be used toward a cafeteria plan
of benefits including health insurance (2 options, HSA available), dental insurance,
vision insurance, life insurance, short & long-term disability, critical illness insurance,
accident insurance, 403b (retirement) plan contributions, and/or HSA contributions.
Benefit pay may also be taken as pay in lieu of benefits.

CMTM has an equitable system of pay that offers a base rate based on position,
longevity pay increases over time. This system is designed for equity and as such we do
not have the ability to negotiate the compensation listed above.
