Position Title: Aquaculture Research Hatchery Manager (id:84079) Campus: Orono Department: Aquaculture Research Institute - OARI Bargaining Unit: UMPSA Salary Band/Wage Band: 04 Location: Walpole ME Statement of the Job: The Aquaculture Research Hatchery Manager will work with members of the Aquaculture Research Institute (ARI), School of Marine Sciences (SMS), and collaborators in support of aquaculture related research activities based primarily at the Darling Marine Center (DMC) in Walpole, Maine. The integrated aquaculture research programs at the DMC support full cycle aquaculture research for bivalves and macroalgae from hatchery through grow out and this position will assist in supporting all facets of production and research. Master’s level degree in marine aquaculture or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Strong work ethic and attention to detail.

Demonstrate the ability to work as part of a group, but also as a self-starter, working sometimes with significant independence.

Computer proficiency.

Strong skills in written and oral communication, comfort in working both in groups and in a one-on-one setting.

Comfort and skill working in outdoor environments, including aboard small to moderate marine vessels.

Ability to learn, follow and where needed develop protocols and maintain detailed records.

Experience in a laboratory setting requiring sterile technique and adherence to biosecurity protocols.

Preferred:

Five years or more of applied research, or direct experience in the aquaculture field.

Direct experience with hatchery culture of marine bivalves and microalgae

Significant experience in related research and project coordination.

Experience as an industry collaborator or direct experience with aquaculture or fishing industries.

Basic Requirements for Physiology Series, GS- 0412 Degree: in one of the basic animal sciences or physiology; or a related discipline or field of science that included at least 24 semester hours in the basic animal sciences, of which 10 semester hours were in animal physiology. Evaluation of Education: Courses such as anatomy; cytology; invertebrate and vertebrate zoology; embryology; entomology; animal, dairy, and poultry husbandry; nutrition; genetics; and physiology may be used to meet the 24-semester-hour requirement in the basic animal sciences. Courses in physiology, animal or human physiology, cellular physiology, or courses that were well oriented toward animal or human physiology, e.g., some advanced courses in biochemistry, are qualifying as animal physiology courses.
