Systems Engineer

Position: Systems Engineer Location: Bethesda, MD (Onsite) Education and Certifications: Education: A Bachelor’s degree, in Computer Science, Engineering, information systems, or a related field (or equivalent experience) is required. Certifications: Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP) / Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) / Any relevant certificate. A RHCE (Red Hat Certified Engineer) certification would be a plus. Primary Job Duties and Tasks: Conduct daily network administration tasks of computing resources, including perimeter premises, WAN routers, LAN routers and switches, load balancers and firewall; they shall participate in defining network operating procedures and providing suggestions to improve the overall network security and performance. Perform or assist in the engineering, planning, coordination, and performance of the installation, configuration, testing, operation, troubleshooting, maintenance, patching, and monitoring of Unix/Linux Operating Systems including latest version of Red Hat, CentOS, Oracle Unbreakable Linux, and their subsystems, and related software, such as Apache, Java, etc. Install, configure, test, troubleshoot, maintain, and monitor virtualized environment running on VMWare vSphere 5 environments, NetApp storage infrastructure, and F5 web load balancers (Local Traffic Manager). Supervise, and manage the daily activities of configuration and operation of business systems. Optimize system operation and resource utilization, and perform system capacity analysis and planning. Provide support to manage Puppet enterprise software to maintain the configuration of systems. Provide assistance to authorized users in accessing and using business systems. Provide assistance to manage and configure the NAGIOS monitoring systems, as well as responding to alerts. Provide support for backup and recovery using NetApp SnapShots, SnapMirror, SnapVault, and Dell NetVault software. Device and Equipment Administration shall perform or assist in the planning, coordination, and performance of the installation, inventory, configuration, testing, operation, troubleshooting, maintenance, and monitoring of devices including, but not limited to, various equipment such as Sun servers, HP Proliant Servers, F5 Local Traffic Manager, NETAPP Storage Systems (FAS6000 and FAS8000 series), Brocade 4100 Fiber Switch, Overland Neo Tape Libraries (4000 series). Configure computers, communications devices, and peripheral equipment. Maintain and configure systems for optimum performance, including keeping systems up to date with the latest patches, software, and hardware releases in a timely manner. Costs for software and hardware upgrades to systems shall be covered by maintenance agreements with vendors, which are separate from this contract. The contractor shall be responsible for implementing these upgrades. Assist the security team in the planning, installation, maintenance, and operation of security systems and devices, software, or mechanisms. Perform or assist in meeting the objectives of providing confidentiality, integrity, availability, and access for legitimate government and public users of the resources. This includes providing services to assist in prevention of internal and external system attacks, damage management- such as perform or assist in informing authorities, backup system data, remove intruder(s), and contain and monitor intruder(s), damage assessment – such as perform or assist in attack recovery (including examining audit trails and records, identifying stolen accounts and data, locating system modifications, and system restoration), and damage prevention (including patching security vulnerabilities, locking user accounts, changing passwords, and reducing services). Assist DBA’s in the planning, coordination, and performance of the installation, configuration, testing, operation, troubleshooting, maintenance, and monitoring of database management systems, and products such as Oracle, Oracle RAC, and MySQL. Specific Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Minimum of Seven (7) years’ experience as a network engineer in a heterogeneous system and network environment comprising of UNIX, Linux, and Windows platforms. Hands-on experience in configuring, and monitoring network equipment, including physical and virtual servers, storage systems, load balancers, SNMP managers, and protocol analyzer. Demonstrated experience in traffic flow analysis, network management, network topology design, security, performance, and fault tolerant architecture. 5+ years of knowledge of communication protocols, including TCP/IP, SNMP, Mail/SMTP, Web (Apache, Tomcat), FTP, DNS, Proxy, Samba, Firewall (NAT, IP Tables, Packet Filter, IP Filter), LDAP, NFS, NIS, NFS/CIFS/FCP, and other related IP protocols. Demonstrated capability of analyzing, debugging, tracking, fixing, and protecting the network from security and performance issues. Understanding 24x7 operation requirements, and experience in a process oriented working environment. Demonstrated communication skills and the ability to work with people at every level; capability with solution-oriented, goal-oriented approach to accomplish the assigned tasks. Experienced in high performance network infrastructure, next generation multimedia communication, and fault tolerant/high availability systems. Ability to develop a complete disaster recovery and system backup plan with the responsibility of producing and maintaining all system documentation.
