Reporting to the Director of Grounds, the Horticulture Specialist is responsible for supervising horticulture and campus lawn maintenance activities to ensure the highest possible quality standards for McDaniel College landscape areas in addition to overseeing and implementing all safety policies and procedures among team members.

Specific Responsibilities

Design, purchase and plan the installation for beds, annuals, perennials and trees.

Landscapes new ground areas; repairs damaged ground areas, replaces bushes, hedges, shrubs and trees.

Perform, guide, monitor qualify of and assist other employees in the planting, watering, weeding, spraying, fertilizing, mulching, edging, and clean-up of all annuals, perennials, shrub beds, borders and safety

Implement work plans developed by the Director and Assistant Director

Ensures that all responsibilities are completed in accordance with all institution policies and procedures currently in effect

Assist the Director of Grounds planning campus budget for annuals and rotations.

Mow and landscape grounds using all types of power equipment, including: power mower, fork lifts, saws, edger, shears, light to medium weight trucks to pick up and deliver materials and supplies, and light or medium tractors and attachment used to maintain grounds as needed.

Responds quickly, timely and accurately to both internal and external work orders and requests.

Performs tree evaluation and assessment including diagnostic and risk evaluation, tree planting and staff supervision

Applies herbicide and pesticide chemicals to grounds, trees, bushes, shrubs, and lawns in order to control plant disease and insects.

Inspects equipment each day ensuring it is in safe and proper working order. Repair equipment or see that it is repaired by the proper mechanic.

Ensures that work methods, equipment, and procedures to assure health and safety standards and precautions are in compliance with OSHA requirements.

Implements pest and disease control using integrated pest management (IPM) strategies:

This position is an Essential Personnel position for emergencies such as snow removal, special events, storm damage, power outages and other emergencies that occur within Facilities Management. Schedule must be flexible in order to meet departmental needs.

Must attend required in-service/departmental meetings, training and education

Safely store, label, handle use and dispose of all materials as per Material Safety Data requirements.

Assists with set-ups for major campus events, furniture moves and outdoor refuse collection.

Learns to perform tasks in other fields and preforms other tasks as assigned.
