High school diploma or possession of general equivalency diploma (GED)

ExperienceTwelve (12) months following the achievement of a particular grade level (i.e. Grades D, C, B, A and AA), an incumbent may be advanced to the next grade level provided he/she has taken and passed any required written or practical tests, acquired any required certifications and has met acceptable fitness for duty, work record and job performance requirements.

Level D

A minimum of two (2) years¿ experience performing inspection, testing, installation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of fire suppression systems and other related fire/life safety (FLS) equipment.

Certification/Licensure

Commercial Driver¿s License (CDL) or the ability to acquire one within (3) three months of hire.

A valid motor vehicle operator's license issued from jurisdiction of residence

Roadway Worker (RWP) Level 2 certificate or the ability to acquire certification within three (3) months of hire

Confined Space Training certificate or the ability to acquire certification within three (3) months of hire

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid Certificates or the ability to acquire certification within three (3) months of hire

SummaryThe Fire Equipment Technician is responsible for performing skilled and technical fire protection equipment maintenance work of a complex nature. This includes responsibility for the inspection, testing, installation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of fire suppression systems and other related fire/life safety (FLS) equipment. Work related to this role must be performed according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes, as well as Washington Metro Area Transit Authority (WMATA) safety standards.Job Levels: At each successive grade level of this job (i.e. Grades D, C, B, A and AA), the incumbent is expected to demonstrate increased, distinguishing levels of proficiency and efficiency in knowledge, skills and abilities when performing the assigned duties and essential functions described in this job descriptionEssential Functions

Conducts required inspections of the Authority¿s FLS equipment which is installed in rail stations, bus and rail yards and support facilities. Inspects, tests and maintains wet and dry sprinkler and standpipe systems, deluge systems, pre-action systems, fire pumps, and clean agent systems (FM 200). Ensures the designated equipment is operable according to NFPA standards.

Performs routine inspections in rail tunnel shafts to ensure emergency exit lights and signs, exit doors, exit hatches, fire department connections comply with NFPA codes.

Inspects emergency tunnel evacuation carts (ETECs) according to WMATA standards and procedures.

Maintains an adequate stock of charged fire extinguishers for replacement purposes. Inspects, tests and maintains fire extinguishers as required by NFPA code. Replaces faulty extinguishers with serviceable units from stock and installs fire extinguishers in new and existing facilities as required.

Completes the required forms, tags, and other required documentation that describes completed maintenance work. Prepares parts requisitions for the supervisor's approval, to ensure equipment, systems and associated mechanical devices are maintained.

Supports response efforts in emergencies by providing immediate maintenance to protect people and assets. Responds to and provides assistance during severe weather emergencies, to ensure safety requirements are met/exceeded.

Other Functions

Attends required safety training classes and continuously learns industry best practices for working safely and efficiently. Performs assignments according to established industry best practices and WMATA¿s safety requirements.
