Position Description
JOB SUMMARY:
The Senior Systems and Infrastructure Engineer is responsible for developing and administering the computing infrastructure managed by the Computing group within the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS). This role will be responsible for server and network administration, including cloud servers and a small on-premise server footprint to support the teaching, research, and administrative needs of SEAS. Additionally, this role will work collaboratively with Harvard University Information Technology (HUIT) Support Services and Network Services colleagues to manage firewalls and device network registrations and troubleshoot network issues. In collaboration with other senior members of the Computing team, the Senior Systems and Infrastructure Engineer will maintain the security of Computing-managed systems.
JOB SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
Independently perform work to build, configure, document, and maintain IT infrastructure, ensuring adherence to security and infrastructure standards and best practices and maintaining system health
Design and implement runnable playbooks to automate, replicate, and document machine and infrastructure setup and configuration
Provide technical feedback in peer code reviews and contribute to refining code and documentation best practices
Administer primarily Linux servers in both cloud and on-premises environments
Maintain and develop SEAS network infrastructure
Monitor and optimize IT infrastructure
Perform complex work with strong attention to detail and document procedures
Identify repeatable technical tasks and identify ways to automate when possible
Maintain and update documentation for all systems within this position's responsibility
Implement security procedures and leverage tools that safeguard the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of systems and data
Participate in weekly meetings with Operations colleagues to collaborate, define, and implement infrastructure solutions to meet business needs
As a senior member of the Operations team, collaboratively work with the Application Development team to design and maintain the infrastructure for hosting their applications in a way that meets compliance requirements and accounts for future expansion
Collaborate with other units, as required, including SEAS Audio Visual Services, HUIT Support Services, and HUIT Network Services to help ensure the optimal functioning of systems and operations in a networked environment
Abide by and follow the Harvard University IT technical standards, policies and Code of Conduct
Basic Qualifications
Minimum of five years' post-secondary education or relevant work experience
Additional Qualifications and Skills
Five or more years of experience in systems and/or network management
Experience managing and supporting Linux servers
Experience creating and maintaining resources in AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform
Experience maintaining a virtual environment such as KVM or VMware
Experience managing enterprise firewalls and network services such as iptables, AWS security groups, Cisco or Fortinet network devices
Experience supporting a broad-based information security effort at the enterprise level, including log management and patch management
Experience with common network and Internet services, including DNS, DHCP, HTTP servers, ssh/sftp servers, and load balancers
Experience with encryption technology such as IPSEC, TLS, and certificate generation
Experience automating common system administration tasks using a language such as Python, Perl, Ruby, Bash, or PowerShell
Experience using a distributed version control system such as Git
Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Ansible, AWS CloudFormation, or Puppet
Excellent communication skills and technical writing ability
Experience with container technologies such as Docker or Amazon ECS
Ability to use discretion and judgment in evaluating problems, communicating, and recommending alternatives and solutions
Work experiences that have depended on strong attention to detail, and consistent use of problem solving and analytical skills
Experience working independently and collaborating within and across teams
High comfort level with managing multiple, often competing, priorities
Familiarity with IT in higher education
