Hello! We are Butternut Bakehouse, a bakery serving charming, rustic handcrafted pastries.

We are a community-centric, small-batch bakery that is growing and expanding our team. We are seeking passionate front of house team members with a love for independent cafés and an eagerness to cultivate a creative, fun, and consistent café environment.

The position is for our second location in Belmont Center, at 49 Leonard Street, right off the 74 and 75 bus lines, and the Belmont Commuter Rail Stop on the Fitchburg Line.

Our Front of House team members at Butternut are the first faces neighbors see when they are greeted at the café The team welcomes customers, takes and fulfills food and drink orders, makes and serves drinks, and keeps a clean and well-stocked workspace. As a Shift Leader, you will help oversee daily operations with the primary goal of creating a positive and memorable customer experience.

A successful applicant is friendly, outgoing, and will have customer service and leadership skills from previous experience, attention to detail, and be a proactive, community-oriented team player. Barista skills are a plus!

Responsibilities

This is a part time role, with the opportunity to grow into full-time, and Assistant FoH Manager.

A Shift Leader supports the FOH Manager and Cafe Manager in leading the Front of House operations. As a Shift Leader, you will help oversee daily operations with the primary goal of creating a positive and memorable customer experience.

Opening, service hours and closing managerial responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Serving customers - taking orders, packing orders, preparing beverages

In absence of the FOH or Cafe Manager, oversee daily service operations and supervise staff while ensuring service and food quality, cultivating relationships, making decisions, and resolving issues

Assume shared responsibilities of the FOH team including opening & closing, orders/front counter support, holiday preparation, farmer’s markets, etc.

Build relationships with guests/customers/neighbors/vendors

Demonstrate and exhibit guest relationship best practices, responding to inquiries and complaints as needed

Act as a role model to uphold service, product quality, and cleanliness standards are being met, including safe handling, rotation, and monitoring of food & drink

Support in conducting weekly inventories (coffee, tea, paper goods, etc.)

Support in receiving and putting away orders

Handle cash from daily register operations

Assist with communication across kitchen and FOH staff to ensure proper flow of service, order coordination, and guest satisfaction

Meet with management as needed for planning and coordination

Assist in organizing the holiday seasons in a prioritized and effective manner, coordinating with management team

Assist managers with administrative tasks as needed

Staff training support responsibilities include:

Lead by example in proper execution of all service standards & protocols

Be a resource to answer team member’s product-, standard-, and systems-related questions

Help maintain a healthy work environment and uphold staff morale aligned with our mission, vision, and values

Assist in training staff on food, beverage, and hospitality

Provide feedback on training materials to help managers keep them up to date, relevant, and effective

Qualifications

We are looking for somebody capable, responsible, respectful, and able to confidently step into the bakery as a leader.

A successful Shift Leader is naturally self-motivated, and moves with a sense of urgency, adapting to the needs of the tasks or situations at hand.

Exhibit a desire to learn, and demonstrate enthusiasm for leadership

Compensation and Benefits

Competitive hourly pay based on experience | $20 - $22 per hour, plus cash tips earned for service hours
