Position Purpose:

A Norfolk County Plumber is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of plumbing systems in various county buildings and facilities. The role involves working on water supply systems, drainage systems, and fixtures to ensure efficient and safe operation. The plumber must comply with all relevant regulations and safety standards while delivering high-quality work in a timely and professional manner. Supervises and performs the repair and replacement of all piping, plumbing, heating, and gas fitting fixtures and appliances; inspects plumbing and heating facilities and equipment in buildings and advises on replacement or repair by himself or by an outside contractor if the job is too large.

Supervision Received: Works under the supervision of the Superintendent of Buildings, the Maintenance Supervisor, or the County Director.

Supervision Exercised: Exercises working supervision over employees assigned to them (when needed) in the repair and replacement of plumbing and heating piping and fixtures in courthouse buildings.

Essential Functions:

Install, repair, and maintain plumbing systems, including water supply, waste, drainage, and gas lines in county buildings.

To be on call in case of emergency breakdowns and leaks in buildings.

Supervises the removal, disposal, and placement of fixtures to be replaced.

Inspect plumbing systems to identify problems and propose solutions.

Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and specifications to plan and execute plumbing projects.

Repair leaks, clogged drains, and malfunctioning fixtures.

Install sinks, toilets, faucets, and other plumbing fixtures.

Work with other maintenance staff to ensure plumbing systems are integrated into broader renovation and building projects.

Test plumbing systems for leaks and other faults.

Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and plumbing codes.

Maintain records of production and materials used on the job for county documentation.

Supervises employees or contractors on the removal of, walls, ceilings, or drilling of holes to obtain access to broken plumbing, heating, or gas lines to be repaired or installed.

May be required to fill a senior building custodian position at the request of the Superintendent of buildings or designee.

Provide emergency plumbing services when needed.

Work Environment:

Work is typically performed in county buildings, including offices, courthouses, golf course, and other Norfolk County facilities.

May involve exposure to wet conditions, noise, and varying temperatures.

Protective equipment, such as safety goggles and gloves, may be required.

Recommended Minimum Qualifications:

Applicant must have at least four to five (4-5) years of commercial and/or residential experience as a licensed plumber.

Must have knowledge of the tools, equipment, and materials commonly used in the plumbing and maintenance trades and be able to use materials involved with the installation, removal, maintenance, extension, and alternation of plumbing systems.

Experience with Cloud Maintenance Management Software (CMMS) and ability to utilize a digital work order management process.

Knowledge of local and state plumbing codes and regulations.

Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.

Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.

Ability to work independently or as part of a team.

High school diploma or GED.

Valid Commonwealth of Massachusetts Journeyman Plumber’s License and Gas Fitting license, (as required by the state of Massachusetts), a Commonwealth of Massachusetts Master Plumber’s License is preferred.

Familiarity with OSHA, and Safety codes.

Ability to exercise sound judgment and focus on details as required by the job.

Valid unrestricted driver’s license and the ability to travel to various county locations.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to lift heavy materials and equipment.

Must be able to maneuver a minimum 6-foot ladder.

Comfortable working in confined spaces or at heights.

Must be able to stand, kneel, bend, and work for extended periods.
