Position Summary:
The Norfolk County Plumber is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of plumbing systems in various county buildings and facilities. This role involves working on water supply systems, drainage systems, and fixtures to ensure efficient and safe operation. The plumber must comply with all relevant regulations and safety standards while delivering high quality work in a timely and professional manner. Supervises and performs the repair and replacement of all piping, plumbing, heating, and gas fitting fixtures and appliances; inspects plumbing and heating facilities and equipment in buildings and advises on replacement or repairs.
Supervision Received: Works under the supervision of the Superintendent of Buildings, the Maintenance Supervisor, or the County Director.
Supervision Exercised: Exercises working supervision over employees assigned to them (when needed) in the repair and replacement of plumbing and heating piping and fixtures in county buildings.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Install, repair, and maintain pipes, plumbing systems, including water supply, waste, drainage, and gas lines in county buildings.
On call requirement in case of emergency breakdowns and leaks in buildings.
Supervises in the removal, disposal, and placement of fixtures to be replaced.
Inspect plumbing systems to identify problems and propose solutions.
Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and specifications to plan and execute plumbing projects.
Repair leaks, clogged drains, and malfunctioning fixtures.
Install sinks, toilets, faucets, and other plumbing fixtures.
Test plumbing systems for leaks and other faults on a regular basis.
Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and plumbing codes.
Maintain records of production and materials used on the job for county documentation.
May be required to perform removal of paneling, wall, ceilings or drilling of holes to obtain access to broken plumbing, heating, or gas lines to be repaired or installed.
May be required to fill a senior building custodian position at the request of the Superintendent of Buildings or their designee.
Perform preventive maintenance to ensure plumbing systems remain in optimal condition.
Respond to emergency plumbing situations, such as water leaks, broken pipes, and sewer backups.
Interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and specifications to ensure proper system installation.
Ensure compliance with plumbing codes, safety regulations, and environmental guidelines.
Collaborate with other tradespeople, such as electricians and HVAC technicians, on larger maintenance projects.
Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and compliance with regulatory requirements.
Train and assist other staff as needed in plumbing-related tasks.
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Valid Massachusetts Journeyman required, or Master Plumber License preferred.
Minimum of 5 years of experience in plumbing installation, maintenance, and repair.
Knowledge of plumbing codes, regulations, and safety practices.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.
Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Valid Massachusetts driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working in a municipal or government setting.
Certifications in backflow prevention or gas fitting.
Experience with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift and carry up to [50-75] lbs.
Ability to work in confined spaces, crawl spaces, and at heights.
Ability to stand, bend, stoop, and kneel for extended periods.
Work may be performed in indoor and outdoor environments, sometimes in adverse weather conditions.
Work Schedule & On-Call Requirements:
This position requires standard working hours of Monday – Friday, 7:30 AM – 3:30 PM.
Salary/Benefits: According to the AFSCME Maintenance bargaining unit contract
On-Call Requirements:
The Plumber will be required to perform jobs scheduled after-hours and/or emergencies, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
On call requirements, the Plumber must be available to respond to emergency situations in a timely manner.
Failure to respond to on-call duties as required may result in disciplinary action.
