Abt Associates, a Massachusetts-based research organization, has partnered with the MA Department of Early Education and Care (EEC) and New Profit to conduct an evaluation of the Massachusetts Early Childhood Support Organization (ECSO) initiative. One of the data collection activities involves in-person classroom observations in a number of early childhood programs across Massachusetts. For observation measures, we will be using the infant, toddler, and Pre-K versions of the CLASS in addition to some other measures. More information about the ECSO initiative can be found here:

Needed: Individuals for the position of early childhood center classroom observer in the Southeastern region of Massachusetts. This is a part-time temporary position that includes conducting observations in preschool classrooms in licensed center-based care providers in Massachusetts in April, May, and possibly early June 2025. Applicants must be available at least a minimum of 2 mornings per week (Monday through Friday). Staff will be hired as consultants through a temporary staffing agency. No benefits can be provided. We will pay for certain approved travel expenses, and access to a car is essential for this work. Weekly timecards will be completed online, so candidates must have access to computer and internet. Qualifications for All Positions
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Education, Psychology, or related field preferred.
Job skills and experience:
- Excellent interpersonal skills, organizational skills, and attention to detail are required.
- Comfort with accurately entering data and using a computer tablet is required.
- Experience working with children in early childhood/elementary education settings is strongly preferred.
- Experience with conducting classroom/home observations is preferred.
- Training/education in child development preferred.
- Previous research experience preferred.
CHILDCARE SETTING OBSERVER
Time Period: Observers must participate in a study training in late March. The dates have not been determined yet, but there will approximately 2.5 full day training sessions conducted virtually. Observations will be conducted in April and May. Observers must be available at least 2 days per week during the work week. All observations will take place in the morning.
Job Location: Observations will take place in licensed early education and care centers across the state. However, we are specifically looking for data collectors in the Southeastern part of Massachusetts. Data collectors may specify preferred areas of the state to work in and must be able to transport themselves to the data collection sites (up to a 60 to 90 minute driving radius).
Position Description:
Classroom Observers will conduct approximately 4 hour observations of preschool classrooms using the COP/TOP observation tool. This position may include regular data entry and will also include helping to schedule observations with centers.
Salary: Observers will be paid between $26-$32/hour, depending on relevant experience and language skills.
Other: Candidates will be required to have CORI/SORI checks, which can be arranged upon conditional hiring.
