Seeking an in person, approximately weekly Chinese lesson, for two students (we would be eager to join a small in person class as well, but have been unable to find one in Worcester).
Father and son are conversational in Spanish and French respectively with some informal familiarity with basic Mandarin; one of us has a recent 300-day Chinese Duolingo streak and the other studied one semester about 15 years ago. We wish to begin a textbook-based curriculum with some added work on speaking, vocab, and writing.
Please, NO online-only inquiries.
The ideal candidate will have: some experience teaching Chinese to English speakers in a structured curriculum; native level proficiency or graduate study; cultural knowledge to help explain idiom and nuance; good handwriting in simplified characters and clear diction in Mandarin. It is necessary to use a textbook, ideally with a workbook accompaniment such as the Integrated Chinese series. We will pay for any necessary materials if the tutor does not possess them.
2-3 hours per week is probably the right amount of time. We would be willing to submit written work via email and possible have some discussion work via videoconference, but at least some weekly in person teaching is necessary.
Timing is flexible but ideal times might be Sunday PMs or Monday or Thursday afternoons. We would be willing to work around the tutor’s schedule but would prefer a relatively stable weekly schedule.
Location should be in or near Worcester, MA. We would be happy to travel to you within Worcester, or have you come to us.
Compensation to be determined. We are willing to pay for time spent grading written work and mileage for driving if you come to us (we are also happy to meet at a location on transit, such as WPI or the central Library).
