Safety Director will serve as the senior leader responsible for shaping and sustaining a proactive and accountable safety culture throughout the company. Reporting directly to executive leadership, the Safety Director will lead a team of safety managers and coordinators, providing strategic direction, mentorship, and operational oversight across all business units.

This role entails designing, executing, and continuously refining comprehensive safety programs that ensure a safe, healthy, and compliant work environment for all employees and stakeholders. The Safety Director will oversee the development and implementation of safety training, field inspections, compliance audits, and risk mitigation initiatives. Additionally, they will manage the reporting and resolution processes for all incidents involving workers’ compensation, general liability, and fleet-related claims.

By aligning safety objectives with operational goals, the Safety Director will champion continuous improvement, regulatory compliance, and workforce well-being— positioning safety as a core value within every aspect of the organization.

Key Responsibilities

Safety Program Management

Develop, implement, and enforce comprehensive safety policies and programs across all departments.

Ensure full compliance with OSHA, DOT, EPA, ANSI, NESC, and state-specific safety regulations.

Conduct and supervise routine site inspections, safety audits, and risk assessments for fiber optic splicing/testing, aerial construction, and civil/underground, including trenching, directional drilling and other various heavy equipment operations.

Investigate workplace incidents, injuries, near-misses, and safety violations, lead root cause analysis and direct corrective actions.

Maintain all safety-related documentation, including inspection reports, training records, and regulatory compliance data.

Administer third-party safety platforms such as ISNetworld, MSDS/HAZCOM, and the company's incident management system.

Training & Employee Engagement

Oversee the creation and delivery of safety orientations for new employees and subcontractors.

Lead and develop training programs on key topics such as confined space entry, fall protection, hazard recognition, traffic control, electrical safety, and emergency response.

Organize safety meetings, toolbox talks, and drills across all field locations.

Promote a culture of safety accountability through employee recognition initiatives and active engagement strategies.

Regulatory Compliance & Reporting

Lead company in compliance with OSHA 1926 (Construction Safety), DOT/FMCSA regulations, and other applicable laws.

Prepare and submit required reports to federal, state, and local regulatory agencies.

Serve as the primary liaison for government and client-led safety audits and inspections.

Coordinate permitting, licensing, and certification efforts for compliance-related activities.

Site Safety & Risk Management

Monitor active construction sites to ensure correct PPE usage, hazard controls, and adherence to safe work practices.

Enforce site-specific safety protocols for traffic control, confined spaces, elevated work, and equipment operation.

Collaborate with project managers and superintendents to integrate safety into all phases of project planning and execution.

Respond to on-site emergencies, coordinate with first responders, and ensure accurate post-incident reporting and review.

Qualifications & Requirements

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Construction Management, or a related field (required).

Experience:

o 7–10 years of experience in construction or utility safety management, with at least 3 years in a leadership role required.

o Direct experience in telecommunications, fiber optics, or utility construction environments is required.

Certifications:

o OSHA 30 or OSHA 500 certification is required.

o CSP (Certified Safety Professional), CUSP, or CHST (Construction Health & Safety Technician) required.

Technical Knowledge:

o Strong understanding of OSHA 1926, DOT/FMCSA, NESC, and ANSI standards.

o Proficient in incident investigation, root cause analysis, and implementing effective mitigation strategies.

o Ability to manage and interpret data via safety management platforms and reporting tools.

Technology Skills:

o Proficient with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook) and capable of learning company-specific software.

o Familiarity with GPS tracking, telematics, and drone inspections for safety monitoring (preferred).

Other Competencies:

o Outstanding communication, leadership, and decision-making abilities.

o Public speaking and training facilitation experience.

o Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel frequently to various project locations across New England.

Work Environment

Field presence required at active construction sites, including exposure to outdoor conditions, elevated work areas, and heavy equipment.

Office-based responsibilities for administrative functions, reporting, and program development.

Occasional after-hours and weekend response to emergency incidents or critical project activities.

Work Conditions

Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in all-weather/temperature conditions.

Must be able to sit upright and type efficiently.

Must be able to focus on a computer screen for extended periods of time.

Ability to speak, read, type, and write.

Manual dexterity for keyboard, telephone use, and driving.

Ability to walk, stand, and reach.

Ability to lift, carry, push, pull up to 25 pounds occasionally.
