Supplemental InformationThis vacancy is located in the Medical Services Clinic of Eastern Louisiana Mental Health System in Jackson, LA. ELMHS is the largest 24-hour, multi-site, state psychiatric complex, comprised of residential, outpatient and inpatient services. This posting may be used to fill vacancies in other divisions or units at Eastern Louisiana Mental Health System.The position will be filled as a Job Appointment (open to all qualified applicants). There is a possibility that this position may be converted to a Probational Appointment should funding become available. Some job duties include, but are not limited to: Responsible for all aspects of the management of the laboratory and supplies ready by inventorying stock, placing orders, verifying receipt. Keeps equipment operating by following operating instructions, troubleshooting breakdowns, maintaining supplies, performing preventive maintenance. Documents information by maintaining daily logs and equipment record books. Resolves problems by examining and evaluating data, selecting corrective steps. Completes projects by assisting project team, attending and participating in group and project meetings. Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, reading technical publications. Enhances laboratory and organization reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests, exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments. Some tasks associated with this position include, but are not limited to: Draw labs with 2 Identifiers Leave lab requisition on building of patient drawn and refuse labs Centrifuge lab specimen Verify specimen with lab order sheet File requisition copy for lab result return check-off Check results for alert and critical labs, call and report to values to unit nurse Write alert values in alert book, person who received the critical lab call, fill out critical/stat sheet with appropriate time and call to information Take all lab result to proper doctor and building to be signed off by nurse or doctor that results were received Resumes will not be accepted in lieu of work experience. For further information about this vacancy, please contact: ELMHS-HR@GOV (225)634-0259Minimum QualificationsMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Two years of experience as a laboratory assistant, laboratory technical assistant, laboratory technician or blood bank phlebotomist. SUBSTITUTIONS: Completion of a twelve month training program in histological techniques under the supervision of a qualified pathologist will substitute for all of the required experience. Satisfactory completion of a one year program in medical laboratory technology at an accredited vocational-technical school will substitute for all of the required experience. College training will substitute for the required experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for one year of experience provided that six semester hours of each thirty are in any one or a combination of these specialized fields: laboratory animal technology, laboratory animal science, animal science, biology, microbiology, chemistry, nursing, zoology, agricultural sciences, physics, bacteriology, histological techniques, medical technology, immunology, urology or renewable resources. An associate degree in medical technology or nursing will substitute for all of the required experience. A baccalaureate degree with twenty-four semester hours in bacteriology, biology, histological techniques, medical technology, immunology, urology, zoology, chemistry, histopathology, mycology, or microbiology or any combination of the above coursework will substitute for all of the required experience. Certification as a Laboratory Animal Technician by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science will substitute for all of the required experience. NOTE: Any college hours or degree must be from an accredited college or university. NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: For positions in Human Testing Laboratory: Licensed to practice as either a Laboratory Assistant or a Clinical Laboratory Technician in the State of Louisiana as required by Louisiana Clinical Laboratory Personnel Law R.S. 37:1311-1329 and the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners. NOTE: This job is used by many agencies in different laboratory settings. Therefore, the types of experience and/or training required to perform the duties of specific positions will vary. LEVEL OF WORK:Entry SUPERVISION RECEIVED:Close from higher level laboratory or Medical personnel. SUPERVISION EXERCISED:None. LOCATION OF WORK:Clinical laboratories, educational or health care facilities; Statewide. JOB DISTINCTIONS:Differs from Laboratory Technician 2 and Laboratory Technical Assistants by the preparation of laboratory specimens to be evaluated by higher level laboratory personnel. Examples of WorkEXAMPLES BELOW ARE A BRIEF SAMPLE OF COMMON DUTIES ASSOCIATED WITH THIS JOB TITLE. NOT ALL POSSIBLE TASKS ARE INCLUDED. Performs veni-puncture in keeping with standard protocol on patients to obtain blood for requested analysis. Interviews, screens, and performs sterile veni-puncture in keeping with standard protocol to obtain 500 ML whole blood for use in the blood bank. Prepares laboratory specimens such as blood, urine, stool, and sputum for diagnostic evaluation. Prepares feces and other materials for examination for the presence of ova and parasites. Prepares, embeds, cuts, stains, mounts, labels, and catalogues tissue sections. Prepares, stains cover slips, and catalogues cytology specimens. Prepares reagents, soils, and plant and animal tissues for analysis to identify pH, lime, organic matter, minor elements, soluble salts, etc. Operates pH meters, salt bridges, balances and colorimeters, calibrating as necessary. Performs microscopic examination, records, and reports test results.
