Position Summary: The Phlebotomist Inpatient obtains and prepare specimens for analysis and performs various screening tests primarily in the acute care/inpatient setting, may require on-call shifts.Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma or GED

Urine Drug Screen Collection Certification (DOT) and Breath Alcohol Testing Certification (BAT) within 3 months post probationary period

American Heart Association BLS required within 6 months of hire

Demonstrates competencies in obtaining specimen collections in acute care, during codes and traumas

Previous healthcare experience as a Phlebotomist, Medical Assistant, Patient Care Tech, EMT

Preferred:

ASCP or equivalent Phlebotomy Certification

Associate Degree in Science Related Field

6 months phlebotomy experience in an acute care setting

Essential Job Functions:

Verifies test requisitions by comparing information with nursing station log; bringing discrepancies to the attention of unit personnel.

Verifies patient by reading patient identification. Follows proper specimen labeling techniques.

Obtains blood specimens by performing venipuncture, heel sticks, or other collection techniques including Peripheral line collections.

Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following department procedures; observing isolation procedures.

Responds to codes and traumas as assigned and Performs EKGs and transmits results.

Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations.

Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the physician, pathologist, nursing station, or reference laboratory; referring unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification; notifying supervisor of unresolved orders.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Demonstrates sound judgement, patience, and maintains a professional demeanor at all times.

Ability to work in a busy and stressful environment with limited supervision.

Ability to work varied shifts including but not limited to weekends, holidays, and call shifts.

Exercises tact, discretion, sensitivity and maintains confidentiality.

Computer applications, MS Office, EMR, internet applications and standard office equipment.

Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work while meeting multiple deadlines.
