WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHERThe Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont Chapters of the Nature Conservancy seek an energetic conservationist for the position of Family Forest Outreach Specialist to strengthen the Northern Appalachians Forest conservation programs. The Family Forest Outreach Specialist will reach out to individual family forest landowners and to groups of landowners/organizations to provide information about climate-smart forest management and forest conservation. They will work specifically to support landowners enrolling in the American Forest Foundation/The Nature Conservancy Family Forest Carbon Program (FFCP) as well as state and federal programs that incentivize landowners to manage their land using climate-smart forest practices that increase carbon stocking and improve forest resilience. This is a 2-year position that may be extended based on funding and need.
WE'RE LOOKING FOR YOU
Provides technical assistance to family forest owners interested in the Family Forest Carbon Program and/or forest conservation programs within the Northern Appalachians in MA, NH, and VT.
Maintains a current familiarity with the range of forest management and forest conservation programs in the three states, including current use tax program, landowner incentives, and land protection programs.
Both proactively reaches out to, and reactively answers questions from, landowners and NGOs/groups about these programs.
Generates maps and lists of landowners in TNC's Resilient and Connected Network of lands who may be a good fit for the Family Forest Carbon Program and other programs, and determines efficient ways to connect with those landowners and gauge their interest in those programs.
Has a deep understanding of and provides technical assistance and management assistance for the Family Forest Carbon Program, including answering landowner questions as they move through the enrollment process, and assisting with eligibility determinations (by reviewing management plans and/or through site visits).
Travels frequently within the region to present information and/or meet with landowners, estimated 25-50% travel.
Assists TNC staff with monitoring, evaluating, and adaptively managing the Family Forest Carbon Program and other incentive pr grams for forest management and conservation, by conducting field monitoring and reporting landowner feedback and needs.
Responsibilities and Scope
Acts as a key member of the Family Forest Carbon Program (Northeast) Implementation Team.
Works within a budget to complete projects on time.
Collects and analyzes various types of data including ecological monitoring data, GPS data, and produces basic maps using GIS software.
Ensures program compliance with internal policies and external requirements, including annual monitoring and reporting.
WHAT YOU'LL BRING
Bachelor's degree and 3 years' experience in forestry, ecology, environmental science, natural resource management or similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Relationship building experience to work closely with a variety of partners (e.g. landowners, scientists, media, and foresters).
Experience completing tasks independently with respect to project management and timeline(s).
Experience with communication via written, spoken, and graphical means in English and other relevant languages, including to the public.
Experience using common software applications such as Microsoft Office: Outlook, Word, Excel; GPS and ArcGIS; and/or similar applications.
Willingness to travel, including occasionally on evenings and weekends.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of forest management, conservation practices, and conservation science.
Some experience with GPS and GIS systems.
Knowledge of the natural history and ecosystems of the Northern Appalachians.

SALARY INFORMATIONThe starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $52,000 - $62,000 for annual base salary. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidate's actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate's location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges.
