Software Engineering Intern - Summer 2026 - 2027

Gain hands-on experience working with real-world machine data from advanced food sorting systems used by customers around the globe. As part of TOMRA's Research & Development team, you'll contribute to next-generation digital tools that help transform operational data into meaningful insights for customers, service teams and engineers around the globe. We are looking for a Software Engineering Intern studying Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline to join our Research & Development team and contribute to TOMRA's next-generation digital solutions. This internship will be paid and run from November to February across a 10-week period. You'll work alongside experienced software, electronics and applications engineers to help develop TOMRA's digital dashboard and observability solutions. You'll work with machine data from advanced sorting systems, helping collect, transform and visualise operational information to create meaningful insights that support performance monitoring, troubleshooting and continuous improvement. Here's a sneak peek into what you could be doing:Engineering Data Pipelines: Design and build data pipelines that collect, transform, and prepare operational machine telemetry, from high-level system performance metrics to granular item-level dataProcessing Real-Time Streams: Working with high-throughput telemetry streams and event-driven messaging systems, combining data from multiple machine sourcesOptimizing for Search & Analytics: Transforming and denormalizing complex operational data, loading it into scalable analytics and search platforms to ensure fast, reliable insights for operators and techniciansDeveloping Observability Solutions: Build dashboards and visualizations that help customers and engineering teams understand machine behaviour, diagnose anomalies, and monitor operational outcomesWriting Core Logic: Using Python, C, and other software tools to support data processing, system integration, and time-series data analysisCross-Functional Collaboration: Partnering with software, electronics, and systems applications engineers to turn complex hardware events into intuitive operational metricsThrough this project, you'll gain exposure to observability concepts, using metrics, events and operational data to provide greater visibility into machine behaviour and support faster diagnosis and performance improvement. What You'll Learn During this internship, you'll gain hands-on experience with: Modern Data Architecture: Time-series data, distributed search platforms, and observability principles used in large-scale operational systemsIndustrial IoT Integration: Working with telemetry from industrial hardware, integrating data across APIs, databases, and event-driven messaging systems Professional Software Practices: Collaborative software development using Git, code reviews, testing, and agile delivery methodologiesIndustrial Domain Expertise: Deep understanding of advanced sorting systems and high-throughput automation used throughout the global food industryData-Driven Hardware Diagnostics: Applying telemetry and operational data to monitor machine health, investigate anomalies, and improve product quality outcomesDeadline to submit an application is Sunday, August 16th, 2026!
