LEAD MEDICAL LAB SCIENTIST

JOB SUMMARY Collects and analyzes human clinical specimens using established, approved, medical laboratory methods. Testing methods used may be waived, moderately complex or highly complex as defined by CLIA 88. Proficient with use of laboratory analytical equipment. Performs preventive maintenance, troubleshooting and minor repair of complex instruments. Performs and interprets quality control procedures to ensure high degree of accuracy and precision. Interprets analytical data and correlates to patients' clinical condition. Functions in a leadership role to assist section supervisors with effective operation of core laboratory operations. Other required abilities include: entering and retrieving data from Laboratory Information System, excellent communication skills, interaction with the public and medical/nursing personnel, making decisions under pressure, handling multiple priorities, and managing stress appropriately. Essential Functions: · Work may involve clinical laboratory testing procedures which require high degree of theoretical knowledge of Laboratory Medicine, technical expertise and familiarity with laboratory instrumentation. Must meet minimum current qualifications for high complexity testing (CLIA-88). · Position requires theoretical and practical knowledge of quality control, quality assurance and performance improvement as they relate to Laboratory Medicine. · Position requires exercise of independent judgment with minimum degree of supervision. Work involves the exercise of judgment in the analysis of facts and conditions regarding individual problems or transactions to determine what actions should be taken within the limits of standard practice. · Visual acuity sufficient for work which deals largely with visual inspection involving small anatomic or physiologic details as well as the whole patient, and sufficient for preparing and analyzing data and figures, transcription, computer terminal operation, extensive reading and visual inspection involving small parts/defects. · Works a flexible schedule, which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays. Ability to endure periods of heavy workload or stress. · Ability to make decisions under pressure, work with frequent interruptions, handle multiple priorities, manage stress, and respond appropriately to unexpected situations. · Basic proficiency with hospital and laboratory computer systems. Ability to advance basic computer skills as St. Joseph Hospital adds new systems or performs upgrades to existing systems. · Provides leadership to other staff in the daily operation of the Laboratory. A role model and mentor to other staff. Leads by example in all responsibilities. Works in a self-directed manner. Coordinates efforts to effectively work with others in a way that is productive. Takes a leadership role in the absence of a supervisor · Demonstrates the ability to be a team player, seeks solutions to problems, and provides others with encouragement. Collaborates with others to achieve performance improvement. · Ability to establish and maintain effective communications and positive working relationships with supervisory staff at all levels, co-workers, other employees and the public. · Ability to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word. Essential functions include activities in which incumbent must respond to inquiries and convey detailed or important spoken instructions in a professional manner to patients, visitors, physicians, families and other employees. Answers telephones and greets employees, patients and visitors in a helpful and appropriate manner. · Respects patient's culture, lifestyle, religion and age when planning or implementing care. · Accepts constructive criticism, initiates appropriate actions to correct situations, and channels emotional reactions in a positive manner. · Demonstrates receptiveness to change and new ideas. Willing to learn. JOB REQUIREMENTS Education: · Earned Bachelors Degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology or closely related field, or equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA-88 standards. · National certification in Medical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology by ASCP or equivalent. Experience: · Five years' experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist working in a clinical laboratory. Other Requirements: · Work may involve testing procedures which require high degree of theoretical knowledge and technical expertise, including practical knowledge of quality control and quality assurance as they relate to Laboratory Medicine · Position requires exercise of independent judgment with minimum degree of supervision.
