Emmaus, Inc., located in Haverhill, MA, is a non-profit housing and service organization that helps homeless families and individuals rebuild their lives and reach their fullest potential. Emmaus is seeking a caring, committed and detailed oriented candidate with previous human service experience to join the staff of the Emmaus Family Shelter serving parents and children. The Family Advocate is responsible for providing trauma based support to all assigned families in the Family Shelter by assisting them to identify needed services, establish Re-Housing Plans, make referrals, and conduct follow-up to insure each family has the necessary tools to overcome obstacles to finding permanent housing.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Welcome new families and volunteers into the shelter.

Assist with shelter volunteers.

Provide orientation of the facility to assigned families.

Provide appropriate customer service at all times to clients and donors.

Conduct intake and orientation to new families.

Set up first visit with families within 2 days of arrival in the shelter.

Provide crisis intervention support as needed.

Meet weekly with the HAP staff and assigned families to complete and update progress on the Re-Housing Plan.

Assist families to identify community services, make appropriate referrals, and follow up with families on results.

Accompany and transport families to community services and apartment searches as appropriate and approved by the shelter director.

Assist the other shelter staff in daily operations of shelter to ensure a safe environment for families.

Complete and file reports of shift activities including incident reports, infractions of shelter rules, and serious incident reports.

Complete and file reports with Department of Children and Families as necessary under the direction of the shelter clinician and following the Child Abuse and Neglect Policy.

Contact the appropriate agencies in the event of an emergency.

Inform Program Director of immediate repairs or safety concerns and report all others to the for next day repair.

Participate in workshops, staff meetings, and other relevant training.

Interpret for families as needed (if applicable).

Make referrals for DHCD child care vouchers.

Perform other duties as assigned by program director.

Responsible for providing trauma based support to families.


This is a Sunday – Thursday position: Must be willing to work Sun – Mon (8am – 4 pm) /Tues – Thurs (11am – 7 pm).

BA in Human Services/Social Work. (AA in related field with 2 years experience working with at-risk families can be substituted).

Previous experience working with low income populations.

Ability to work well both independently and in a team setting.

Ability to multi-task and remain flexible to address issues as they arise.

Strong written and oral communication skills.

Ability to work well with diverse clients and providers.

Written and oral fluency in English

Bi-lingual English/Spanish preferred.

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Physical Requirements: The employee must be able to climb up to 3 flights of stairs and occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds.

Must have a valid driver's license and be able to pass a motor vehicle records check to screen for driving record at an "acceptable" rating from Emmaus Insurance vendor.

Must undergo CORI check before hiring.
