The Gallup Sun weekly, located in the heart of Indian Country, is searching for a part-time freelance editorial assistant to assist the associate editor with production each week. This is a telecommuting position, averaging 16-25 hours per week. Selected EA is required to work Wednesday and Thursday, with the availability of additional hours on other days of the week. There’s also an opportunity to cover stories as a freelance reporter for the Sun, in addition to the editorial work. This is a contracted, W-9 position. We are looking to fill this position ASAP.

QUALIFICATIONS

- A minimum of 1 year of solid newspaper reporting and/or copyediting experience required.

- Consistent availability each week is a must.

- Ability to craft original snappy headlines and rework boring ledes required. Rework and edit photo captions as needed.

- Tact and patience is required as you’ll sometimes call reporters with questions about their stories.

- Ability to format and accurately edit all stories and filler, utilizing AP and house stylebooks.

- Must own a reliable phone, computer w/printer, scanner, and have access to the internet at your home … so you’re ready to roll if hired!

- Required computer programs: Gmail account, Microsoft Word, Skype, Google Docs, Dropbox, and Adobe Reader.

- Great Internet research skills required.

- Seeking someone who plans on sticking around for awhile due to the amount of training involved with this position.

- Ideal position for the freelance journalist looking to add a steady gig to their schedule; or the recent journo retiree looking to stay in the biz; or the journalist/editor that strongly desires to work out of the home office part-time for the foreseeable future.

- Ability to multitask and work efficiently under deadline pressure is a must. Your home workspace during work hours must be a distraction-free zone.

DUTIES

- Accurately edit and fact check stories pre-layout using Google Docs or Word.

- Assist with copy editing the layout during production. (No, you do not have to paginate pages in this position.)

- On deadline days, conduct interviews, and write briefs/stories as assigned by the associate editor.

- During work hours, as requested by the associate editor, you’ll post stories to the Sun’s website and share on Facebook and other social media accounts.

- Essentially, you’ll assist the associate editor with any tasks assigned to you.

- Mandatory hours – Wed.: 9-6 pm. Thursday: 8-5 pm. (1 hour break each shift.) Associate editor may require additional hours on Thursday eve; or request additional hours on other days of the week; or, request for you to write original stories under the freelance reporter pay schedule. So, some flexibility with schedule on other days of the week (yes, even the weekend sometimes) is strongly desired.
